4th and 5th grade have had an amazing day! They led their own book clubs about “Flush” by Hiaasen and “The Hero Two Doors Down” by Sharon Robinson. They selected key details from the text and responded to each other’s ideas! Then we went on a hike with kindergarten - such a great way for the older kids to demonstrate leadership!
Today was a fun STEM day for Kindergarten! They learned about volcanos so that they could play "floor is lava" bear edition. They created different shaped structures using the same blocks to see how many bears they could rescue from the dangerous lava!
What a BUSY week we have had! This week our school has had plenty to do— Ms. Henley’s class had their publishing party, Mrs. Chessin took her students to the museum of flight, Mrs. McDonald and Mr. Brock took the upper school kids to Washington D.C., we all welcomed our alliance friends from across the country to our school, and lastly Mrs. Matthews had her sweet baby Eloise!
After such a fun-filled week, we hope everyone has a fantastic spring break!!
Our 4th & 5th graders had an amazing morning at Sloss Furnaces! Our kids asked fabulous questions, and we learned so much about the industrial roots of Birmingham and Sloss Furnace's impact on the US and the world. They also learned tons about the social history of the furnaces and how it reflected society!
Happy Pi Day!! Today, Mrs. McDonald’s math classes celebrated 3.14 in the best way possible— with pie🥧 Students learned about pi, while making and eating pie! What a yummy day they have had!
Thank you Mary Anne Freeman, author of the children’s book “Let’s Roll Oliver!” for coming to read and talk to Ms. Henley’s class today! These 1st and 2nd graders have been busy writing their first book, so what a better way to get excited about being an author than hearing from a published author📖

Miss Henley’s 1st and 2nd graders began learning about the scientific method this week. Today they did an experiment called “The Great Cookie Dunk” where the students formed a hypothesis, predicted the result, and performed an experiment on if 4 different types of cookies would float or sink in milk! What a yummy, hands-on way to learn!🍪
Today Mrs. Crapia’s 3rd grade class put on a wax museum to end Black History Month! Such a fantastic way to bring history to life!
Art Walk 2023🎨 What a fun time it was last night as we got to look at all of the art our students have got to make in their art classrs so far this year. Thank you to Mrs. Rottemberg for all your hard work to put this together!
Today we were joined by the Lakeshore Foundation for a wheelchair basketball game!🏀Our students had a BLAST getting to watch our teachers and staff play against their coaches and future Paralympians! Lakeshore Foundation, thank you so much for coming and sharing your message about how anything is possible, even when challenged with obstacles and adversity— but that the most important thing is to have fun!
Today our school went on a field trip to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens to celebrate TuB’Shevat! This was such a fun way for our students to learn to appreciate the world around them, and to take care of our environment!🌎
To kickoff Black History Month, Miss Henley’s 1st and 2nd grade class watched Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Students then wrote a letter to Dr. King thanking him for everything he did. Throughout the month of February, Miss Henley will be teaching the importance of Black History Month. Everyday she will introduce and discuss someone who is black that has positively impacted our world today!
Our 4th and 5th graders have recently read “The Phantom Tollbooth” in Mrs. Chessin’s class, so today those students and our teachers dressed as the characters! What a fun day it was!
Today in Mrs. Chessin’s class, they read and discussed “Martin’s Big Words” and then examined an image of children holding protest signs from the Children’s March. They even discussed the history of nonviolent resistance. Students then created their own signs to display in the school library with their reactions to famous words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our Middah for January is “kindness.” Our 4th and 5th graders made some graffiti in our lunch room so that other students can brag about the kind things they see around our school! Great job being kind!
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee winner Abigail Rothman (7th grade), first runner-up Emmy Curnitt (2nd grade), and all of our participants!! Everyone did amazing today and we are so proud of you all🐝

We learned all about the gear they wear to protect themselves on the job, and how we can best protect ourselves in case of a fire. Mountain Brook Fire Department we appreciate everything you do!
Everyone meet Louie!!! Louie is a therapy dog in training. He will be making frequent visits to our school as he prepares to be “the goodest boy” possible for his new owner!
