🎉🦁 History in the Making at The Day School! 🦁🎉
This week, our students got a real-life lesson in the election process as they voted for a new school mascot—our very first in 50 years! 🗳️
📜 The Process:
--> Students registered to vote with their name, address, phone number, and signature.
-->They heard passionate pitches from three amazing candidates: Chai Lions, MacaBee Mavericks, and Ruach Rams. Each one represented the core values that make our school special—courage, community, and spirit!
-->Conversations buzzed around campus as students discussed their favorite mascots, some trying to sway others, while others kept their choices secret. 🤫
On Election Day, students voted in person with registration cards and the extended Birmingham Jewish community had an opportunity to vote online!
After counting all the ballots, we’re excited to announce… the winner is 🦁 Chai Lion!! 🦁
This historic election has been a powerful reminder of the importance of civic engagement, voice, and community. We couldn’t be prouder of how seriously our students took this responsibility.
The Chai Lion is now our official mascot—representing the strength, courage, and unity of The Day School. 🦁🎉
Here's to 50 more years of school spirit with our new mascot! 🏆✨

What do you do with your pumpkins? Our 7th graders got creative and turned theirs into globes! 🌍 They explored map projections, social equality, longitude, persistence, and attention to detail along the way.
We were thrilled to have Ms. Gresham, our beloved retired NEMJDS teacher, guide us through the steps. The students especially enjoyed plotting Alabama and Israel, and they’re so proud of their finished masterpieces!
Check out their amazing work!

Today, we had an energy-filled Yom Mishpacha Day as we prepared for Sukkot! Our students crafted beautiful decorations for our sukkah, including stained glass leaves made from tissue paper, colorful painted wooden stars and apples, and shiny bead accents.
We also created a "Chain of Hope" with 101 yellow links, each holding a wish and remembering the hostages in Gaza—Officer Wrenn even practiced his Hebrew to contribute.
The 5th graders showcased the catapults they built last month, teaching everyone how to launch sweet treats and hit targets with delicious accuracy!
As always, the halls were filled with music, dancing, and excitement as we celebrated the spirit of Sukkot together.
Wishing everyone a Happy Sukkot! 🌟

Yesterday was an AMAZING day filled with fun and excitement! We kicked things off with the incredible weatherman James Spann, diving into the science of weather and how it works. 🎤🌦️ Be sure to catch us on ABC 33/40 this evening and tomorrow morning!
Next, we hopped on buses for our first field trip of the year to Oak Mountain State Park, where we explored turtle habitats and learned how our actions impact their ecosystems. 🐢 We also visited a bird sanctuary and discovered fascinating species like barn owls and turkey vultures! 🦉🦅
After a fun-filled morning, we enjoyed a picnic lunch and participated in tashlich, a meaningful tradition where we reflect and cast away our past year's sins by throwing bread into the water, symbolizing a fresh start for the new year. 🍞💦
The students had an absolute blast, especially singing on the bus rides! 🎶❤️
We had the best morning with James Spann yesterday learning all about the weather!

🎉🎉We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our student run library, Leadership through Library! Our amazing 5th and 6th graders have been hard at work preparing for the grand opening!
They’ve created eye-catching book displays, crafted thoughtful book recommendations using the OREO (Opinion, Reason, Example, Opinion) method, and even planned fun contests to boost reading engagement among students.
To kick things off, they delivered an inspiring “Taco”-bout reading presentation to get the whole school excited about the library! 🌮📚
This program empowers our young leaders and encourages them to take charge of our library.

Exciting Times at Bubbies STEM Kitchen!
This past week, 50 preschoolers (ages 2-5) had a blast exploring the sweet traditions of Rosh Hashanah! 🍯✨ We dove into the science of honey, discovering how it can take on different shapes—solid or liquid! The kiddos decorated beautiful plates for their apples and honey, then experienced the magic of caramel transforming from solid to liquid for some delicious dipping! 🍏🍬
These hands-on activities give families a taste of the fun and learning that current students at The Day School enjoy every day.
Don’t miss our next Bubbies STEM Kitchen on October 22nd as we celebrate Sukkot with more interactive fun! 🌿
