August 24 is a momentous day in Roman history.
This is the date generally ascribed to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD ( (the date of Aug 24 is linked to the manuscripts of Pliny the Younger; there are problems with the date); in the eruption the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum (among others!) on the bay of Naples were destroyed and buried.
And in 410 AD. Alaric and his Visigoths sacked Rome, hastening the fall of the Western Empire. O tempora! O mores!
