This summer Saylor’s Village supported more than 100 Birmingham residents, from Westend to Inglenook, by sharing fresh produce, buying school supplies, leading gardening workshops, and strengthening Birmingham connections. Sustainable practice is central to our mission, and we’re working to make the garden greener and more resilient. To do that we need a dedicated water line and backflow valve, and the current estimate is $2,800. This is more than we can cover right now.

If you can help with a donation, volunteer lead, or a resource connection, it would make a huge difference for the community we serve.

Always with care,
Kizzi

Yesterday we popped in on BuildUp Titusville and got a peek at their garden progress. 👀 Uncle D (impromptu gardener and regular BuildUp employee) has developed his green thumb and is ready to spread the knowledge to the youth this Fall.

Soil was donated as part of our 2026 Spring gardening initiative. 🪏🪴

📚✏️ BIG NEWS! School is back!

We’re excited to kick off our first full school year serving the City of Birmingham, and we’ve made a few changes to better support our students before and after the school day!

🗓️ Starting Monday, August 17
Our new operating hours are Monday–Thursday | 7:00 AM–6:00 PM

☀️ BEFORE THE BELL | 7:00 AM–8:15 AM
Students can stop by before school for:
🥣 Grab & Go Breakfast
💻 WiFi & Printer Access
🎒 School Supplies
🪥 Hygiene Supplies

🤫 Morning hours are QUIET HOURS.
Let’s keep the hootin’ and hollering to a minimum so everybody can start their day right. 😂

📚 AFTER THE BELL | 2:45 PM–5:30 PM
Students are welcome to stop in for:
📖 Homework & Study Space
💻 WiFi & Printer Access
📚 Free Books

🍎 FREE After-School Snacks
Available Mondays & Wednesdays while supplies last.

📌 A few reminders:
• Students must be present. No exceptions.
• First come, first served
• All resources are available while supplies last

Our goal is simple: remove barriers so students can focus on learning. Whether it’s breakfast before class, printing an assignment, grabbing a notebook, finding a quiet place to study, or picking up a snack after school, we want The Greedy House to be a place where students know they are always welcome.

Here’s to a safe, successful, and GREEDY school year! 🦍💛

Alright, Titusville!

I see y’all seeing me seeing y’all. 🧐😂

I want to say “thank you” to those participating in this work from behind the scenes.

-🍍We had a community member drop a pineapple to be planted. It’s currently sitting at the table under the pavilion being FULLY rooted in water before we move it to the ground. We may also need a greenhouse for this. Stay tuned!!

-SOMEBODY remembered the Everything Drive is all summer long and left a 30 gallon bag full of clothes and household items to be donated on our behalf. 😎 Yeah, yeah, yeah! I see you!

-One of our most active neighbors added a peach tree today. Duraznos for the win! 🍑

We have so much more in store for these next two weeks. Love y’all BIG. 🥬🩷

It takes a Village. 💕

Hey, Titusville. 👋🏾

I’d like to re-introduce myself. My name is Kizzi, and I’m a 30 year old mom of three. I was born in California, but my family has been in Birmingham since the 1940s, and I have been a part of the Birmingham community since I was 5.
I wear several different hats. I am a graduate student at UAB, the outreach coordinator for UAB Institute for Human Rights and founder of Saylor’s Village, a Birmingham based nonprofit focused on empowering and educating black and brown spaces by encouraging sustainable agricultural practices from a human rights lens.

Pictured below is our UAB summer intern, Katie, me and my youngest, Kairo. If you see us in the community, don’t hesitate to stop and say hello.

I would like to know how I can get you out to the community garden we’ve created for you. If you have time, send me a message, stop by the garden or complete the survey below (preferably all three) and let me know how we can best get acquainted.
