🎉 Congratulations, Nancy Shelton! 🎉

Today we celebrate the retirement of a true pillar of emergency nursing in Alabama.

A lifetime ENA member, Nancy was there at the very beginning. She is a founding member of the Alabama ENA State Council — and went on to serve as state president twice. The council she helped build is still standing, still growing, and still guided by the standard she set.

Generations of emergency nurses across this state have been shaped by her leadership, her advocacy, and her willingness to show up year after year.

Thank you, Nancy. Enjoy every minute of what comes next. 💜

🔴LIVE August 19 | From Start Up to Sustainment: Building a Program—and Making Every ED Forensic Ready (1 CE)

Explore five high‑impact actions to strengthen ED forensic readiness and patient care.

When a community lacks local forensic resources, nurses often become the catalysts for change. Review key clinical, legal, and leadership lessons from two RNs who helped launch the Malbis Freestanding ED Sexual Assault (SANE) program, and get practical tips for applying strategies as front-line and emergency nurses. We'll distill “no SANE available” realities into five high-impact actions bedside clinicians can apply immediately to protect patients, preserve options, and support the medical legal process with confidence.

📢 Describe core steps and stakeholders involved in initiating and sustaining a SANE program through the first year (needs assessment, partnerships, staffing, funding).
🩹 Identify five bedside “forensic readiness” actions ED nurses can implement when a SANE is not available to support trauma informed care and preserve patient options.
🔬 Apply evidence-based documentation and evidence-preservation principles, within facility policy, to minimize contamination risk and support safe patient and evidence transfer across care settings

As of March 9, 2026, ENA formally assumed stewardship of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) membership, continuing education, and practice resources following IAFN's dissolution. Roughly 6,000 forensic nurses from more than 25 countries are being folded into ENA's community of about 40,000 members worldwide. Former IAFN members received a one-year ENA membership beginning April 1, and IAFN Lifetime Members were granted Lifetime ENA memberships. This makes forensic nursing an official specialty focus within the broader ENA structure.

The Alabama Emergency Nurses Association Forensic Nursing Committee advances the practice of forensic nursing across Alabama by supporting nurses who care for patients affected by violence, abuse, and trauma. The committee promotes education and training in forensic evidence collection, trauma-informed care, and the specialized needs of survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, child and elder abuse, and human trafficking.

Through professional development opportunities, resource sharing, and collaboration with SANE programs, hospitals, and community partners, the committee works to strengthen the forensic nursing workforce statewide. It advocates for improved patient outcomes, standardized best practices, and greater access to forensic nursing services in emergency and clinical settings throughout Alabama.

The committee also serves as a network for forensic nurses across the state, fostering mentorship, peer support, and a unified voice on legislative and policy matters affecting forensic nursing practice and the patients it serves.

Attendees will discuss the committee's charges, define its role within the Alabama Emergency Nurses Association, and outline upcoming projects and priorities for the coming year.

Membership Requirement: Committee members must be current members in good standing of the Alabama Emergency Nurses Association (ALENA).
