UAB’s Henry Panion III to conduct, arrange for Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life” 50th anniversary tour

Join us for a performance by guest artist Dr. Cory Mixdorf!

Dr. Mixdorf, trombone, will be playing along side Dr. Miroslava Panayotova, piano. The recital will take place on Monday, September 14th at 7:30 pm in the Hulsey Recital Hall. Works to be performed include “Servant of Peace” by Dorothy Gates, “Mourning Dove” by Megumi Kanda, “Concerto in Bb Major” by Tomaso Albinoni, and more.

Dr. Cory Mixdorf is part of the distinguished faculty at the University of Arkansas where he maintains a strong studio and directs the University of Arkansas RazorBones. He also is a regular guest artist and clinician on the national and international level. His recent endeavors include recording his first solo album, “Songs and Elegies,” performing at the 2021, 2022, and 2023 International Trombone Festivals, and touring Germany with the brass ensemble, Eurobrass.

Dr. Miroslava Panayotova is a Bulgarian-American pianist and has made multiple appearances as a recitalist and concerto soloist. She is a Teaching Assistant Professor of Piano and Keyboard Area Coordinator at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Her concerto performances include appearances with the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and many more.

Join us for Chamber Music @ AEIVA!

The UAB Department of Music is hosting a free evening where chamber music meets contemporary art. Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk curates this chamber music concert connected to the AEIVA exhibition, Erin Jane Nelson: Living and Working. Enjoy compositions from UAB’s own William Price and Matthew Scott Phillips. Then, hear classical works from Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and more. The program will conclude with a jazz trio of Steve Roberts, Carlos Pino, and Abe Becker.

A reception begins at 5:30 pm, followed by the concert at 6 pm. Arrive early to explore the art that inspired the music before the performance.

In March 2020, the UAB Concert Choir traveled to Mobile after being selected as one of the featured choirs for the Southern Region of the American Choral Directors Association Conference. Due to cancellations, some universities were not able to perform and were even told to not attend.

Fortunately, the UAB Concert Choir was still able to perform. They sang a program that Dr. Brian Kittredge, our Director of Choral Activities, had chosen on the theme of light. The concert unknowingly proclaimed hope at the beginning of what would be a long and terrible season in our national life.

We now share it with you as a sign of the power of music and of singing, and as testimony and witness to the amazing light who was Dolly Parton.

Congratulations to the UAB Concert Choir for being selected to perform at the 2027 AMEA Professional Development Conference!

The Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) Conference will be host to educators and students from across the state and is a great honor for which to be chosen to perform. The UAB Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Brian Kittredge, will represent the department of music on Friday, January 22nd at 9:30pm at the BJCC.

Please help us in congratulating these wonderful musicians!
