Last Friday, UABSON faculty and alumni joined the Birmingham Black Nurses Association Inc. for their Scholarship and Continuing Education Program. Several members of our community presented during the event, including Dean Shirey, who delivered a keynote presentation.

During Nurses Week 2026, alumni from Alabama’s No. 1 nursing school, the UAB School of Nursing, were recognized for their clinical leadership, nursing knowledge, technical skills and mentorship. UAB Medicine and Children's of Alabama honored 18 UABSON alumni with their annual awards.

UABSON alumnus Dustin T. Diggs has been named Chief Nursing Officer at UAB Hospital. After a national search, Diggs was selected to lead UAB Hospital’s nursing teams and support continued growth in nursing practice, operations and patient care.

UABSON Professor and Interim Assistant Dean for Research and Scholarship Edwin Aroke has been selected for the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by Sigma Nursing. He joins 26 world-renowned nurse researchers being inducted into the Hall of Fame during its International Nursing Research Congress in July in Toronto.
