Doctors gave Jacob Smith a 100% chance of an unfavorable outcome.
Today, he's walking, talking and continuing to pursue the passion that helped fuel his recovery.
After a devastating traumatic brain injury in 2024, Jacob's family, care team and therapists at UAB and Spain Rehabilitation Center refused to give up. Neither did he.
"My motto throughout recovery has been that I'm all gas, no brakes until I get better."
Two years later, Jacob's recovery continues, one step, one therapy session and one victory at a time.

Whether it’s rocking a newborn, helping a patient feel less alone, or making sure someone gets to an appointment safely, small acts of kindness have a very real impact.
UAB Hospital is currently seeking volunteers for several programs, including Helping Hands in the NICU, the Hospital Elder Life Program, and the Golf Cart Team, which helps patients navigate campus with ease and comfort.
And for UAB employees, getting started is often even easier, since many onboarding requirements may already be met through employment.
If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to give back, this could be it.
