TLC holiday party celebrating a great year and honoring our amazing President and Executive Director, Katrina Watson. From everyone at TLC, we say THANK YOU to Katrina for over 5 years of outstanding leadership. Her efforts have yielded countless achievements for The Literacy Council, in addition to helping us better serve Central Alabama.
Good luck, Katrina. We will miss you!
Junior League of Birmingham turned 100 this year. The Literacy Council was proud to be one of three community partners who shared their story - a Junior League story - at their 100 Year Gala. Hear remarks from ED Katrina Watson.
As part of TLC's Author Series made possible by Alabama Humanities Alliance, Lisa McNair joined in a discussion of her book "Dear Denise: Letters To The Sister I Never Knew" led by Adrienne Marshall, Director of Adult Literacy Programs at TLC.
Lisa McNair was born in 1964, one year after her older sister, Denise, was murdered in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. "Dear Denise" is a collection of forty letters from Lisa addressed to the sister she never knew, but in whose shadow of sacrifice and lost youth she was raised. These letters offer an intimate look into the life of a family touched by one of the most heinous tragedies of the Civil Rights Movement. Thank you for sharing your story, Lisa!
