25 years ago:

On 9/11, UAB Center for Injury Science Senior Manager Shannon Stephens was in New York for a conference. With years of experience as a paramedic, he didn’t hesitate to volunteer to help survivors. He was crossing the Brooklyn Bridge when the second tower fell, making his way to Ground Zero: “You are trained to go into a chaotic environment, and you try to prioritize care.”

Service is an integral part of our medical students' journey, and our MS1s kicked off their medical education by giving back through Orientation Service Day. By supporting local nonprofits, students began building connections with the Birmingham community they will serve throughout their time in medical school.

“Working with the incoming MS1s was incredibly rewarding. It was inspiring to see their commitment to serving the community from the very beginning of medical school.” — Olivia Keating, MS4
