What do we do? We provide physical ways to make the birthing mom feel better and cope with pain...however she needs me to provide peace and support is what I do. What if she wants an epidural or has a csection? Nurses and Doctors take care of the medical side of the birth....Doulas provide support emotionally and physically no matter what her choices... it is not our job to tell you how to birth... we are simply there...to encourage you and also provide information you may need or ask for to help you make the best decisions for yourself. About me: I am in school getting my BAS in Heathcare Management, then i plan to become a nurse also. (Never stop dreaming or learning)… I am a trained birth coach (doula) specializing in breastfeeding, maternity/prenatal, labor and child birth through Birthwell Partners, Bham. I provide support, education, resources and comfort as needed for the mother, as well as to help the partner learn how to help her cope as well. I have been trained in pregnancy, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, newborn and post partum care… and trained in coaching childbirth through DONA Intl. I attended Perinatal health advocate training and Breastfeeding training through BirthWell Partners. I am a second time surrogate mother. I also have twin boys of my own as well as a toddler. Just some facts.
Doulas are there to help the mother and the partner achieve the birth they want..whether it is medicated, unmedicated, natural, vbac, csection...whatever she wants, we support those decisions. While the doctors come in a couple times only focusing on the medical aspects, doulas offer continual emotional and physical support in whatever ways she needs. It is our job to empower the partner also to be there for the birthing mom by showing them ways to help her cope. We do not replace the partners, we are a team.

Our job is not to try to sway you to make certain decisions about your birth. Our job is to provide the support and resources you need, in the ways you specifically need it, to have the birth you want. No matter what choices you make, whether you want pain relief or not...we support you prenatally, during labor and birth as well as after. You deserve the birth you want. You deserve support in your post partum period. When most people forget about the momma and are doting over the new baby, doulas come and help you navigate the good, bad and scary parts of birth and the post partum period.

Our job is to empower the birthing person to advocate for herself and be there for support emotionally and physically, never taking the place of her partner.
