Teaching Artist Bio:
Francesca Scalici has been baking as long as she can remember. Francesca started baking in her childhood home, both because she enjoyed the process, but more so the end product. For 10 years, she ran Francesca’s Kitchen from her home, baking and designing custom cookies for baby showers, birthdays, weddings and just about any special event you can imagine. Since then, she has worked at various bakeries around town and is excited to share her icing tips and tricks!

🌿 Nature is our canvas! 🌸✨

Our incredible Eco-Art Exploration campers (ages 6–12) wrapped up an amazing week at the historic ArtPlay House! 🌍❤️

Throughout the week, these young artists experimented with color, texture, and sustainable materials. On their final day of camp, they collaborated to create this stunning, larger-than-life nature mandala right on the sidewalk! By combining leaves, pinecones, twigs, flowers, and hand-painted rocks, they transformed everyday elements into an extraordinary work of art.

We are so proud of their eco-inspired imagination and how they discovered the deep connection between art and our environment. 💚

Teaching Artists Bio:
Rachel Brockwell has been a fiber artist for over 15 years and has been pursuing art as a full-time career for over a year. She sells her art under the brand, “ur local hookr,” and frequently teaches many forms of art ranging from crochet and knitting to collaging and paper crafts. She finds sustainability + veganism very important, and in all of her projects, both personal and professional, she prioritizes using recycled & reclaimed materials. Because of this, everything she makes is truly one of a kind. Rachel believes that art should not only be appreciated by all people, but that it should be accessible to all people. By sourcing materials secondhand, she finds that costs plummet along with people’s inhibitions—”you can’t ‘mess up’ something that was already labeled as trash!” So whether we’ve met before or we will be working together for the first time, Rachel can’t wait to create with you.

"For Good: Because One Vision Can Change Countless Lives"

On May 14, 2026, ArtPlay students, both past and present, along with the greater Birmingham community, came together to honor the visionary Jane Stephens Comer. Jane’s passion, imagination, and generosity were instrumental in bringing ArtPlay to life.

In a heartfelt tribute, students performed “For Good,” a powerful reflection on the lives she has touched and the legacy she continues to inspire.

As we celebrate 15 years of ArtPlay, we are deeply grateful for Jane’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of the arts and the countless young people who continue to find their voice here.
