Through one-on-one tutoring, STAIR empowers students with the tools to read better and dream bigger, because every child deserves to read on grade level.

While Birmingham has seen improvement in student achievement, there’s still a lot of work to be done. 3 out of 4 Birmingham students are currently unable to reach reading benchmarks. The single greatest predictor of high school graduation and career success is third grade reading proficiency. "REWARDING" : one of the most common descriptors used by tutors about their time as a STAIR volunteer. Helping a child learn to read is truly life changing for them, but it's also so rewarding for the tutor.
Our 2026-2027 school year Volunteer Application is already available at stairbirmingham.org/tutor...and it is never too early to sign up to be a part of a child's success 📚❤

A year at Oliver Elementary in under 30 seconds! This funny, spirited group of 14 students completed over 330 lessons in total, with one student increasing their Phonics by 76% and several getting that number to 40% and above!
We're so proud of all of our students and so thankful for the tutors that showed up for them week after week!

School is wrapping up - but we are WINDING up for a Summer Reading List challenge!
In case you didn't know, STAIR gives every single student in our program 10-12 books each year to keep for their very own. This gives them opportunity to read at home, have their family read with them, and yes, read during the summer months when the risk for learning loss is harder on some than others.
If you want to help us fill their bags for those Summer Reading List, STAY TUNED! We will share the details for participating next week.
Thank you for supporting our students during the school year and the summer breaks!

Avondale saw 23 students come through the STAIR program this year (daytime and afternoon program!). Among those, *most* of them were first time students in our program. And we're so proud to say that in all, they completed 650 lessons! Some of these students saw 60, 80, and 💯% comprehension increase!! These data points are directly correlated to not just our students' dedication to our program - but our TUTORS dedication to them.
Everyone deserves pats on the back for this progress! We're so excited to see their growth to becoming confident readers!

More Year in Review to come!
