STAIR of Birmingham

STAIR of Birmingham Through one-on-one tutoring, STAIR empowers students with the tools to read better and dream bigger, because every child deserves to read on grade level.

While Birmingham has seen improvement in student achievement, there’s still a lot of work to be done. 3 out of 4 Birmingham students are currently unable to reach reading benchmarks. The single greatest predictor of high school graduation and career success is third grade reading proficiency. Children who can’t read are unlikely to graduate from high school, find their life’s work, or read their c

hild’s favorite bedtime story. Two afternoons a week, STAIR students work one-on-one with a dedicated volunteer focused on their individual literacy needs, empowering them to start their adventure in reading. During COVID-19, tutors and students are meeting virtually. After completing the program, STAIR students are excited to pick up a book and read independently, putting them on the path to proudly walk across their graduation stage, apply for their dream job, and teach their own kids to read

We are so thankful for this amazing group of school site directors and assistants - educators, community members, and dedicated volunteers - who ensure tutors get the support they need to make the most out of every session with their student. We’re all getting ready to kick off the 2026-27 tutoring program in mid-September.

It’s not too late to volunteer as a tutor! You can make a big difference by supporting parents and teachers in their efforts to boost literacy for their students. Sign up at link in comments. 📚✏️🌟

"What is a word tutors often use to describe volunteering with STAIR for $100?"
❤"Meaningful"❤
Helping a young Birmingham student learn how to be a confident reader is, indeed, meaningful. When a child learns to read, they excel in ALL subjects in school because they are comprehending the text and using their skills (and imaginations) to really understand what they're studying.

Swipe to see why we're raising funds and collecting books this summer for our students' home library book bags this fall 😄😍
Having books of their very own at home reinforces everything they learn in the classroom and in STAIR tutoring sessions.
Take a look at our previous posts to see how you can get involved!

Did you know that you can choose to tutor one OR two days a week? If you only have one afternoon that works for your schedule, that's OK! Like these 2 women in the photo, they were both paired with the same student so she could receive consistent support from one tutor on Wednesday and the other on Thursday. "Partner Tutors" as we like to call them ☺️
If you have questions about how (or how often) you can be involved - don't hesitate to reach out to Destiny at [email protected] with questions!

"WORTH IT" - we know that tutors take time out of their schedules, routines, and drive to schools to help a Birmingham student become a confident reader. And you know what several of our tutors say about that change in their day to day? It's WORTH IT! Worth it to watch a child confidence grow and to see the potential they have.
