Nothing beats being on the receiving end of these smiles and watching their faces light up as they truly start comprehending and reading text. 😄 Our volunteer tutors' time makes a HUGE difference in our students' lives - but it can also have the most gratifying effect on the tutors themselves.
We need 2️⃣5️⃣ more tutors for our Spring Semester - and we have openings in our training sessions next week! Will you help us on the journey to change the trajectory of a student's academic career? Volunteering with us has a direct impact on them, you, and our community as a whole.

01/08/2024

We are two weeks away from seeing our students for the Spring Tutoring Sessions! If you've been curious about STAIR, please send us a message or call us with your questions!
If you're ready to join a student on their reading journey now, we need you! We are currently reaching towards of our goal for 50 additional volunteers to join us January - May. You can choose to tutor one OR two days a week, whatever works best for your schedule. No background in education required, just a willingness to help a young reader grow.
Sign up is simple at stairbirmingham.org/tutor > followed by our quick, 1 hour training session (dates and times listed here!) > a background check > and lastly site placement! Our Director of Volunteer Engagement, Destiny, will be there to walk you through every step.
Will you be the one who changes a 1st or 2nd graders future?

Thank you so much to Temple Emanu-El for their generosity! We received a hand delivered donation today that will go towards more books in our students' home libraries.
We have the privilege of doing so much gratifying work for our students because of your donations. Thank you again!

In case you missed us!…this is a great video to get a few questions answered and hopefully will give you the encouragement you need to sign up to volunteer with us!

The new year is here and school is already back in full swing.
That means it's TIME to sign up to volunteer with STAIR!
Research shows that 95% of students CAN read, but they need individualized attention to get over that threshold.
That's where YOU come in - Our goal is to get to 50 tutors and we're a little over halfway there - when you sign up, we'll not only get to keep tutoring students already in the program - but we will get to pull some off the waitlist so they can start on their adventure in reading.

We have training sessions available next week to get you ready for tutoring beginning January 22nd.
Sign up is easy - stairbirmingham.org/tutor

The year is coming to an end - and we just want to remind you that there is still time to complete your resolution to give more in 2023!
Your donation to STAIR could help ensure that our students have healthy snacks before each session, that we have the staff to continue to expand our program, and that we serve as many students as possible on their reading journey.
It will also help us buy books for our students' home libraries that make them this excited 😄❤️
Round out your year with a donation to STAIR at stairbirmingham.org/give

We're so thankful for every single hour and cent donated this year, and we're looking forward to what 2024 has to bring!

This is Na'Vaya. Na'Vaya started STAIR in first grade, unable to read on her own. She made so much progress in that year that she catapulted into second grade, reading on her own, writing paragraphs instead of sentences, and comprehending the humorous metaphors found in STAIR's Rhyme Time poems!

You can help students like Na'Vaya by donating! Visit stairbirmingham.org/give to close out 2023 with the gift of reading that Na'Vaya will carry with her through the rest of her academic career AND her life!

We hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays with friends, family, and loved ones.
And we just wanted to encourage anyone who's been thinking about getting a jump on the New Year and all that it brings - volunteering in your community is a GREAT way to kick it all off!

Our goal is to climb our way to 50 additional volunteers for January - May, will you help us get there and make a huge impact on a student in Birmingham?

Happy Holidays from all of us at STAIR! We are so thankful for all of the time and energy our site staff, our tutors, and our donors have put in to our program the first half of this school year.
While our office will be closed until the New Year, we will still be keeping a close eye on tutor applications so we can ensure every student that's waiting on a tutor gets the individualized attention they're wishing for in the new year!

Part 2 of "Pete the Cat Saves Christmas" with a few of our readers from Hayes K-8 and Oliver Elementary! ....will Pete come to Santa's rescue?

12/19/2023

Our students received “Sweet Tooth” by Margie Palatini and illustrated by Jack E. Davis as their holiday gift from STAIR this year!
You may remember this animated, fun story read at our Barnes & Noble book fair - if you didn’t make it, this is such a fun book to read together with your children at home, animate the voices as you hear them, and let their imagination run wild with it!

12/19/2023

This year - we are sharing our students themselves reading "Pete The Cat Saves Christmas"!
We hope you'll listen, read along, and comment encouraging words to our bright young readers in STAIR!

12/15/2023

Wonder if they'll hear Santa on the roof this year!? One of the most rewarding parts about volunteering with STAIR is seeing the students' wheels turn and their minds grow. Imagination is essential to helping them discover the magic of reading and understanding books and text.
There is still time for you to be a part this school year! Sign up to tutor in January - sessions start on 1/22!

More Holiday cheer from our talented, creative 1st and 2nd grade students across Birmingham! Do you hope for snow and days building snowmen like Ericka? Or are you OK with our sometimes 75 degree December days? Each tutor and student pair set aside 5-10 minutes after their tutoring sessions in November to draw their favorite holiday scenes. If you'd like to partner with a student to learn to read, imagine, and even create from time to time - you can sign up now at stairbirmingham.org/tutor

Kimberly Moore sat down with Destiny to share some of the imaginative thoughts of her student - and it's that Kimberly has a "a secret secret double secret super power"....she says she doesn't know what that superpower is yet, but we certainly do - it is that she is generous with her time and volunteers with STAIR!
When asked what she would say to someone considering volunteering, the answer is so simple -- "Do it! Do it! And You won't regret a bit of it. One fun experience."
Sign up now at stairbirmingham.org/tutor for the Spring Semester!

Who better to tell all of you Happy Holidays throughout the month than our STAIR students!?Our students worked hard on art work for our Book Fair with in November, so of course we have to share a few. Imagination and creativity go hand in hand with building their reading skills. Drawing and coloring are also great Brain Breaks that are built in to our curriculum to help our students make it through tutoring sessions that may be a little tougher than the last.

And don't forget we are in need of tutors for January - your time would be the most amazing gift to any of our students as they embark on their reading journey. stairbirmingham.org/tutor

12/08/2023

Did you hear that we’re on a mission to get 50 more volunteers for our Spring Tutoring Sessions!?And while we're talking numbers - did you know that STAIR curriculum uses a systematic approach to introducing phonics patterns to help students learn to decode new words? In fact, when sticking with the curriculum -even if you feel like you have to repeat some lessons- students on average gain 40% on their Word Mastery Skills.
You see, we build our curriculum based off of results because that's what these students need! And they need you, of course, to be their guide and their cheerleader as they build on each and every lesson.

Sign up is simple - at stairbirmingham.org/tutor > You'll receive a follow up from Destiny about a quick 45 minute training session you can schedule for next week or in January, background check, and then we'll get you placed at site!

Valerie Bailey shares with our Dir. Of Volunteer Engagement, Destiny, her thoughts on tutoring students in reading in 1st and 2nd grade.
We can encourage everyone that has the time to get involved all day, but when it comes from the source, our dedicated tutors themselves, no one can say it better.
"To see them when they catch something and they say “oh yeah I remember that” it brings a smile to your face and to your heart to know you are doing something for them."

You could be a part of the change! We need tutors for our January-April semester and training dates are available this month! stairbirmingham.org/tutor

Tutor 12/07/2023

We need more tutors for January! Just one or two hours a week could make all the difference - and we have a NEW (limited) availability for daytime slots at 2 of our sites : i3 Academy Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45-10:45am, and Avondale Elementary School-Birmingham, AL. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9-10 am.

*Returning Tutors that completed training in 2022 or 2023 do not have to attend training again!
*If you're a current tutor and are continuing to tutor through the Spring Semester, you do not have to sign up again - you just get to continue on with your student!

Please share with all friends and family who may be interested in volunteering with us!

Tutor 10 hours a semester makes all the difference for a student who is learning to read. Become a volunteer tutor and partner with a Birmingham student on their journey to reading better and dreaming bigger.

We can’t do any of this without you! THANK YOU!

12/04/2023

Our Story

While Birmingham has seen improvement in student achievement, there’s still a lot of work to be done. 3 out of 4 Birmingham students are currently unable to reach reading benchmarks. The single greatest predictor of high school graduation and career success is third grade reading proficiency. Children who can’t read are unlikely to graduate from high school, find their life’s work, or read their child’s favorite bedtime story.

Two afternoons a week, STAIR students work one-on-one with a dedicated volunteer focused on their individual literacy needs, empowering them to start their adventure in reading. During COVID-19, tutors and students are meeting virtually.

After completing the program, STAIR students are excited to pick up a book and read independently, putting them on the path to proudly walk across their graduation stage, apply for their dream job, and teach their own kids to read
