Downtown Youth Center - YMCA of Greater Birmingham

Our Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, body and mind.

The YMCA Downtown Youth Center opened in 2006 as the result of a dream to serve Birmingham’s young people in a Y built specifically for them. Following the largest capital campaign in this YMCA’s history, the downtown Birmingham facility was built and endowed for generations to come.

Operating as usual

Thank you to Publix Super Markets Charities for supporting youth and teen leadership programs. YMCA youth programs develop future leaders and prepare youth for life after high school. They develop relationships with peers, advisors, and mentors that give them the support needed to be successful. We appreciate our community partners who make this all possible.

In today’s Making History Spotlight we are highlighting not one, not two but THREE of our very own. From left to right in the second picture meet Steve Brown, Rueben Nelson and Ethan Johnson.

For Steve and Ethan today was their signing day, both boys are Seniors at Shades Valley High School in addition to this they are student athletes headed to play football. Steve will be headed to Tennessee Tech and Ethan to Alabama State University; Steve is one of our summer lifeguards and Ethan works our front desk during the summer. In their tenure at Shades Valley Steve a quarterback threw for over 3,000 passing yards and Ethan a linebacker has led the state in tackles for the last two years.

The man in the middle is none other than Coach Reuben Nelson. Coach Nelson has been coaching for 25 years. He first began his coaching career at Hayes Middle School (now Hayes K-8), Midfield High School, Ramsay High School and now Shades Valley High School where he also serves as the Athletic Director.

While at Ramsay he taught history and was an Assistant Principal. Coach Nelson is the first black coach to bring home the blue map for a Birmingham City School. He coached the Ramsay Rams to their first football state championship in 2016. He has mentored and helped countless young men to continue their football career beyond high school and some beyond college. Coach Nelson has his own ties to the Y, many many years ago he was a Summer Camp Counselor at our Northeast YMCA, he currently serves on our Youth Center Board and is married to our very own Mrs. Keesha!

This is 🏈

In today’s Making Every Day History Spotlight we are highlighting the man behind our Summer Cosmetology camp Tavares Gilbert!

Tavares is the owner of the TBT Hair De’Zign Studio in Hueytown Alabama. He has taught cosmetology at Carver High School, Lawson State Community College and Midfield School of cosmetology. Tavares’ ties to the YMCA of Greater Birmingham run deeper than just leading our summer cosmetology camp, years ago Tavares worked the front desk at the Western Area YMCA and at our Northeast YMCA.

Tavares is thank you for giving back!

On this first day of we want to highlight the women you see on a day to day basis. In the world of the YMCA there is a combined total of almost 75 years of Y experience. Outside of Y life they are sisters, wives, moms and entrepreneurs.

In the walls of the Youth Center they are go getters trying to make it happen for staff and the families they serve year after year. They celebrate not only the milestones of their staff but those of your children and love them both fiercely. They work diligently to make sure that your children have every opportunity to be not only YLeaders but leaders in their communities as well.

Then v. Now!
It’s always nice to look back to see program growth. Years ago our after school students would travel twice a week to Mountain Brook for tutoring with some of their students, a young lady by the name of Addison remembered this partnership from years ago and approached us before spring break of last year. She talked about rekindling the partnership but through a robotics club, over the summer our Pathfinders had a week long robotics camp with Addison and some of her peers from Mountain Brook JR. High and High School.

Well Robotics carried over into after school care and here we are. Yesterday our friends competed in Bots in the Brook their last competition of this school year. Mountain Brook JR. High was very welcoming to our team and getting started in the VEX Robotics world. We’ve had a great introduction to the competition side of things and we look forward to learning and growing more in the coming years. Thank You Addison for not only remembering the previous partnership but committing so much time to our students. We cannot wait to continue to learn and flourish 🦾

01/31/2024
