Hilltop Montessori School is a highly engaged academic community of students, parents and educators that embrace the Montessori philosophy.
Hilltop Montessori School was founded in 1996 and provides a beautiful learning environment for students 18 months through eighth grade. Our 7 acre campus is located in Mt. Laurel and certified by the National Wildlife Federation, and a member of the Million Pollinator Challenge Project. We hold four accreditations from Cognia, SAIS, NCPSA and AMS.

The Montessori philosophy integrates classroom pets as real-life teaching partners in each classroom, inspiring students to connect with nature and appreciate their interdependence with all living beings. Through hands-on care, children develop empathy, compassion, responsibility, and keen observational skills, learning practical life lessons while exploring natural behaviors. This experiential approach not only enriches academic subjects like biology and ecology by linking them to real-world examples, but also instills a lifelong curiosity and respect for all life forms. We love our class pets!
Our beautiful 2026 Hilltop Class Pets calendars feature artwork from every primary, elementary, and middle school class as well as fantastic photography featuring Hilltop’s class pets. If you pre-ordered a Hilltop Class Pets calendar, it will be delivered to your child’s backpack on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week; look for a brown paper package tied up with string. If you did NOT pre-order at the Pop-Up Shop on Thanksgiving Feast day and would like to purchase our 2026 Hilltop Class Pets calendar, we will have a limited number on sale THIS FRIDAY at the singalong and a waitlist for January delivery.

Our Story
Hilltop Montessori School was founded in 1996 and is currently the only school in Alabama with the following educational accreditations: Cognia, NPSA, SAIS and AMS. The school is also the only private preschool and elementary school in Alabama to be located in a LEED certified green building with the U.S. Green Building Council. HMS is also proud to be the only school in Alabama that is fully accredited by NCPSA, SAIS, AMS and Cognia. A campus of over 7 acres offers two separate buildings, providing a beautiful learning environment for students ranging in age from 18 months through eighth grade.
