At Genius we believe that International Women’s Day isn't just about a celebration — it's also about making good change. The day began with female workers and mothers fighting for a better workplace and neighborhood, and it's about time we took up that fight once again. One important issue we should discuss is the lack of child care options in America. Good child care is essential to every parent, but it's especially important to working moms because they're out of the home all day long.

Recent challenges around mothering and working have highlighted how these issues are deeply interconnected, and International Women’s Day is a perfect opportunity to address issues such as insufficient child care, poor workplace protections, suppressed pay, and lack of voting protections.

At Genius, we are working to support women, mothers, and young girls who are changing the world!

Camp Fire registration is now open! We are excited to partner with Huffman Academy and SAIL to provide a summer experience for rising third and fourth grade students. Students will review and reinforce vital math, reading, and writing skills in the classroom, and put those skills to use on exciting experiences and performances, while working to build a strong community with their peers. Social emotional learning is an essential part at Camp Fire and students participate in activities designed to build self-confidence, communication and collaboration skills.

Summer camp is an exciting time for students, but it's also an important opportunity for them to learn core skills in a playful environment. Campers at Camp Fire spend the bulk of their days engaged in academics, performing arts, and other fun activities — while still learning to make friends, nurture their social skills, and be resilient. Aftercare is also available for all students!

There are some people in this world who have a heart of pure gold - Meryem is one of those people. Genius is excited to announce Meryem Tunagur as our Program Director. Meryem will lead Camp Fire, our summer program for rising third and fourth grade students in Birmingham City.

In 2007, Meryem and her family moved to Birmingham from the Middle East. After a short adjustment period, Birmingham quickly became home and she found herself staying in the city for her Undergraduate Degree. Meryem graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in 2017 with a B.A in Theatre Educational Psychology; a research major she contracted which focused on theatre therapy for children and adults in marginalized communities.

Over the last eight years, Meryem has worked with many non-profit organizations. She taught theatre classes at the Dance Foundation, worked as a stage manager with local Theatres such as the Virginia Samford Theatre, and Central Alabama Theatre, served on the Junior Board of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (HICA), and was a member of YPN Birmingham. Over the last four and a half years, Meryem has served with the Birmingham Education Foundation (Ed). The Birmingham Education Foundation (Ed) is dedicated to increasing the number of students in the Birmingham City Schools that are on the path to college, career, and life readiness.

In the fall of 2018, Meryem was promoted to Community Engagement Manager. Under
this role, Meryem launched three successful community engagement campaigns, such as the All In Campaign, to better understand the needs, desires, and experiences of Birmingham City students and families. Through these campaigns and Meryem’s work, Ed was able to engage over 3,000 families and students. In the fall of 2021, Meryem shifted to the Communications and
Outreach Manager. Meryem is so excited to continue supporting Birmingham City students and families in the capacity of Program Director with Genius and Camp Fire. She is elated to once again utilize her background in the arts and experience with Theatre Therapy to help students discover their creativity, grow socially and emotionally and explore through play!

This past week, we launched Night Light Library, a classroom based library that will be filled with high-interest, leveled books for students to deepen their love of reading at home! It was so beautiful to see Zaila's hard work over the past two years manifest into something as beautiful as her win of the Scripps National Spelling Bee last night.

To get there, the teen had to navigate her way through words like querimonious, solidungulate, and Nepeta, which she said was the hardest word she had to spell in the competition.

When she realized she won, Zaila gave a little spin and jumped in the air as confetti rained from the sky.

Zaila said she hopes to one day play basketball at Harvard before a career at NASA or as a coach in the NBA.

She said she has a variety of interests and was on the lookout for some new challenges to tackle.

We are excited to launch Night Light Library - a genius powered library filled with high-interest, leveled books for students to deepen their love of reading at home! Instilling a love of reading early gives a child a head start on expanding their vocabulary and building independence and self-confidence. It helps children learn to make sense not only of the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination.

Geniuses will:
1. take books of interest home to enjoy and return - they will also get to take home a clip-on reading light!
2. track books completed - as students log their reading, they will earn points, move up levels, and earn fun badges and rewards (pizza party, anyone?)
3. choose a book to keep each 9-weeks...because we all need a copies of our favorite books.

At Genius, we are excited to nurture the ways in which we communicate to student what success looks like. Success might look like an A+ on a math test, and success might also look like working REALLY hard on a problem that felt impossible to understand at first.

"Saying 'good job' isn't inherently bad or wrong. But what if we acknowledged them in a more specific and meaningful way, instead? What if when we hear ourselves say 'good job' we added one of these phrases next?
