BOCES is a unique and innovative educational institution established to help public schools control costs and provide quality programs by sharing services. BOCES operates as an extension of the local school districts and the New York State Education Department. One of 37 such entities around the state, Broome-Tioga BOCES serves 15 component school districts in Broome and Tioga counties, annually touching the lives of nearly 35,000 students in grades K-12 and many others in adult programs.

The New York State Education Department, Office of Special Education annually selects school districts in our region and reviews the quality of the Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that they develop. This year, Whitney-Point, Union-Endicott and Maine-Endwell were selected for a Targeted Skills Group specifically to assess the quality of the Transition Sections of the IEP's.

With gratitude, our team in Instructional Programs accepted an invitation to attend the 4-part, Targeted Skills Group Workshops with our component school districts. Our districts enroll their students in several of our full-day, special education programs, as a result, our special education teachers are responsible for writing the transition sections of the IEPs that are ultimately assessed by the New York State Education Department. Our team in IP all felt that we have a responsibility to be active, supportive, and collaborative partners in this work.

This week, the Instructional Support Model Teachers and Transition Coordinator attended a full-day workshop hosted at Union-Endicott and facilitated by the NYSED Regional Partnership Specialists to engage in the work. Specifically, the teams spent their time collecting data by reviewing the Transition Sections of current IEPs.

They also conducted Root Cause Analysis to help identify reasons why errors were occurring and concluded by outlining Pathways for Change with plans for correcting errors that were uncovered. This work is very important and ensures that our special education staff are able to produce the highest quality Transition Planning in our student's IEPs. This IP team will bring their learning back to the staff in the programs that they support to ensure that all special educators have the knowledge and resources to produce quality Transition Planning.

Each and every one of these professionals have a level of expertise and dedication to excellence for all students that is second to none. Broome-Tioga BOCES is seeking an Account Clerk to support our financial and administrative operations!

This position plays an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, processing vendor payments, and ensuring accounts are properly reconciled. We're looking for a detail-oriented and organized professional who is comfortable working with financial records and software applications.

Minimum Qualifications:
✔️ At least one year of clerical experience maintaining financial accounts and records, including duties such as reconciling bank statements, posting to ledgers, making journal entries, or reviewing vouchers and purchase orders for accuracy and completeness.

✔️ Relevant college coursework in accounting, business administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.

Key Responsibilities Include:
✔️ Reviewing invoices, reports, and financial documents for accuracy and completeness
✔️ Processing vendor payments and maintaining accounts payable records
✔️ Reconciling vendor accounts and communicating account status as needed
✔️ Using software applications such as Excel, Word, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and WinCap

This morning our Broome-Tioga BOCES New Visions students and instructors took part in their fall Day of Service. For this event, 92 NV students split into seven teams to volunteer doing any and everything from organizing, to lawn work, to wiping down, to mopping up.

It’s a terrific day for our community partners and, well, for our kids and our program. Well done, all.

Another successful trip to The Broome County Humane Society for our students at the ACE Middle School. Our students learned an important life lesson today: Work hard, play hard.

First, they completed their volunteer work (washing dishes, sorting laundry and organizing kitten/cat food). Then they were able to spend some quality time with the amazing animals at the Humane Society.

Cybersecurity Month: Phishing - Stop. Think. Verify. Report.

Phishing isn’t just about suspicious emails. Cybercriminals use email, text messages, phone calls, and even QR codes to create a sense of urgency, build trust, and convince people to take action.

Before responding to an unusual message or request, remember:
Stop: Don’t react immediately, especially when a message creates a sense of urgency or pressure.

Think: Check the sender, look for unusual requests, and be cautious with unexpected links, attachments, payments, or requests for sensitive information.

Verify: If something seems unusual, confirm the request through a trusted method. Don’t rely solely on the contact information provided in the message.

Report: When in doubt, report the message rather than interacting with it.

When something doesn’t feel right, take a moment to verify before you click, reply or share information.

Video Production Student Ambassadors attended ACTEA, an annual conference for CTE administrators, last week.

In their roles as young media professionals, these students filmed the conference and produced a video, start to presentation, which was shown at the conference’s closing breakfast Friday morning. (They also produced two additional videos for the client to use to promote future events.)
