DC JazzFest joins the world in mourning the loss of great Wayne Shorter at the age of 89. Born August 25, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, Shorter has left an indelible mark on the development of music for more than 60 years. He first rose to prominence in 1959 when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, a precocious 26-year-old tenor saxophonist who transformed the group into a modern jazz juggernaut with his inventive improvisations and brilliant compositions such as “Lester Left Town,” “Children of the Night,” and “Free for All.” His career reached across more than half a century - From Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to Miles Davis' 2nd great Quintet alongside Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Ron Carter to his work with Weather Report. In total, Wayne (aka known as the "Newark Flash") won 12 Grammy Awards, the last bestowed this year. He also received a lifetime achievement honor from the Recording Academy / GRAMMYs in 2015. He was a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow and a 1998 National Endowment for the Arts . He received the Polar Music Prize, an international honor recognizing both pop and classical music. He was also a recipient of the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors.
