The 59th Annual Karlo Fujiwara Memorial Taekwondo & Judo Tournament concluded on Saturday, April 18 at the MSU-Billings Alterowitz Gymnasium. It was a great day of competition with some excellent judo matches, high level tkd sparring, creative board breaking routines, and 2 person forms matches.
Setup was Friday night and took less than 2 hours because so many volunteers showed up to help. To kick off Opening Ceremonies Saturday morning, the lineup of black belts walked single file into the gym, then Mikayla Luderitz sang a beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
At that time Randy Waitman was promoted to 9th Dan, Mark Rosales received his 8th Dan, and Matt Wright, Eve Allen and Dave Allen their 7th Dans in Taekwondo. Other Grand Masters in attendance included William Walters, Ed Thompson, Dan Williams, Mike Bergh and Scott McCallum, as well as many other Master Instructors in both Taekwondo & Judo.
Special congratulations to Master Dustin Paul (and his wonderful family) of Big Horn Martial Arts in Powell, Wyoming, recipient of the Karlo Fujiwara Leadership Award in recognition for his past and continuing leadership within his community and through his martial arts. The Judo Shiai was held on one mat area while the Taekwondo forms, sparring and board breaking were conducted on 4 mat areas. Here are a few photos from the event, enjoy!
