Hey folks! My name is Ava, an Outdoor Business major and Marine Biology minor~ this past spring I had the pleasure of joining my Arctic adventure tourism class on a trip to Iceland and will be sharing my favorite memories here over the course of the week! Today I wanted to talk about a few things! Food, the Panama Canal, and a travel tradition I have. First off food within Panama is a lot fresher than in America, as much of the fruit and fish as well as other meats are produced by the locals. Panama hand down has the best fruit as well as fruit juices of all time. It is then cooked by natural methods such as placing it within a fire or over hot coals and breaded, typically with flour. Although most food is made with local stoves and kitchen appliances. Secondly the Panama Canal, which is impressive on its own. Many countries as well as people has gone into thinking this incredible idea, connecting both half’s of the ocean together. Without the canal the next path to transport goods would be by going around the tip of South America. Finally my travel tradition! My tradition consist of collecting Hard Rock pins from around the world to all the places I have been. If I am unable to, either because of time constraints or there is none within the country I will pick up a flag pin of the specific country.

Today I wanted to share some photos of the animals we her able to spot in our time in Panama! In Panama you will be able to spot animals such as sloths, toucans, raccoons (which do not look like the raccoons commonly seen here) as well as lots of different fish species and coral species. I common question I was asked was “What was your favorite part of the trip?” This is where I would say I loved being in Bocas town as well as the surrounding areas. I was able to hear as well as see so many amazing critters! Even a six legged starfish. Durning our time there we also went to the bat cave and saw a huge array of bat species and it was truly breathtaking in my opinion. Finally another highlight from being there is being able to spend time with a local indigenous tribe and make cacao! That itself was a fun adventure.

Hola everyone! My name is Hannah, and I am a rising senior at the University of New England. I am majoring in Animal Behavior and am on the pre-veterinary track. I’m excited to share my journey in Panama with you!
Earlier this summer, I decided to take one of the travel courses offered through UNE, and I do not regret the experience at all. Through this course, I had the opportunity to learn more about conservation efforts in Panama while also experiencing and learning about everyday life and the local culture. This experience allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, learn from the communities around me, and gain a better understanding of how conservation and local life are connected.

My favorite place that I had the chance to visit on this trip was Glymur. This was an optional hike that a few of us decided to do with Dr. Frederich.
We hiked up to the top of this waterfall, and crossed the river at the top to circle back down the other side. In order to get to the top of the falls, we crossed a river by a log and hiked up many stone stairs using a rope for balance.
It was a misty day which really added to the beauty of Iceland, and we all had an amazing time, with many laughs.
This waterfall is the second tallest in Iceland which really added to the whole experience. While it was exhausting it was worth every meter we gained in elevation and I would definitely do it again.
If you have any additional questions about this travel course please feel free to reach out (samantha)! I highly recommend taking a travel course at some point within your undergraduate career, they allow you to learn more about yourself and the world around you!

There are two specific drives that when you’re in Iceland you should definitely travel! The first is the Golden Circle located near Reykjavik that takes you to a variety of waterfalls, gesirs, and craters. It also takes you to Thingvellir National Park, which allows you the chance to walk between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates!
The second is the Diamond Circle located near Akureyri, which has more waterfalls, boiling mud pits, lava fields, a large volcanic crator you can climb, and many natural formations caused by Lake Mývatn.
An interesting spot located on the Diamond Circle is Ásbyrgi Canyon. It is believed that this canyon is a large horseshoe left by Sleipnir, the 8-legged steed of Norse god Odin!

While we had many things on our agenda for this trip, there were times where we got to just explore the cities.
One place that I enjoyed very much was Akureyri, it is the second largest “city” in Iceland, and is located at the end of a fjord. Walking around this city brought back many memories for me as I also had the chance to do a semester abroad here.
While in Akureyri, we also went horse back riding. I had never done this before and it definitely lived up to the expectation! My horse was named Þota, and we went for a ride around the mountains and through the fjord!

Another experience we got to embark on was diving between the plate tectonics! This was a surreal and very chilly experience. We had the pleasure of jumping into the water between the plates and then swimming through them!
With the same group of guides we also went whale watching. This was another amazing experience where we went out on motorized raft boats to have a closer view of these beautiful creatures.
After we went whale watching we got to go snorkeling and a couple of us jumped off of the dock. Being able to build these memories with the people on this trip was amazing, we talked, we laughed, we bonded over our interest in this magical place.

One of the first adventures we took was a self guided tour around the South Coast of Iceland.
We started the day in Reykjavik and travelled to four different waterfalls, the black sand beach, a glacier, and even saw a puffin!
This drive was spectacular. It is insane to see how many waterfalls there are inhabiting the sides of the mountains we passed. This day was also extremely clear, and there was not one cloud in the sky offering amazing views of the Westman islands and of the glaciers in the distance.
The places we visited were Sohleimajokull, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Reynisfjara, Gljúfrabúi, Kvernufoss, and Dyrhólaey!
