A group of UNE health professions students volunteered as part of the medical team for the 28th running of the TD Beach to Beacon, putting their developing clinical skills to work while helping protect the health and well-being of nearly 6,500 runners participating in Maine’s largest road race.

Stationed both along the 6.2-mile course and at the finish in Fort Williams Park, the students worked alongside practicing health professionals to identify and assist runners experiencing heat-related illness and other medical concerns. The experience offered students from UNE’s doctorate programs in medicine and physical therapy an opportunity to serve their neighbors while encountering a fast-moving clinical environment unlike what they typically experience in a classroom or traditional care setting.

Sweat for the Vets on Saturday, August 15th was a huge success! Organized and led by the Student AMOPS Chapter at UNE COM, the event brought together more than 50 medical students, UNE faculty, and community members for a beautiful day of fitness, service, and fun.

Attendees enjoyed great music, raffle baskets, and community resources, along with an OMM tent hosted by SAAO with Dr. Mary Yee and Dr. Bonnie Sendzicki, a medical tent led by EM and Wilderness Medicine Clubs with Dr. Kate Hannify, and blood pressure screenings hosted by Cardiology Club and overseen by Dr. Geoffrey McCullen. We were also joined by organizations including U.S. Army Medical Recruiting, Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, 9/11 Heroes Run, Maine Paws for Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars Portland chapter, and Dr. Amanda Cardella of Aegle Radiant Health.

With 9 medalists across multiple categories, and over 30 competitors the Fitness Challenge was a great success!
Thanks to our incredible participants, donors, and supporters, we raised over $1,500 for Maine Paws for Veterans and Maine Veterans Project!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Sweat for the Vets such a memorable day. We can't wait to do it again next year!

The UNE COM community proudly celebrates student doctors Brandon Swan-Prung, OMS 4, Emmanuelle Oliveira, OMS 4, and Jericho Ghanem, OMS 4, for being named recipients of the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship from the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation. Recognized on a highly competitive national stage, each student has been awarded a $10,000 tuition assistance scholarship to support their final year of medical training.

The Physicians of Tomorrow program honors a select group of exceptional rising fourth-year medical students across the United States who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to humanistic patient care. Earning this distinction reflects not only rigorous scholastic excellence but also the deep compassion and dedication these three future physicians bring to their clinical training and community advocacy.

Having three students honored simultaneously in a single award cycle represents an extraordinary milestone for UNE COM. With candidates nominated from accredited medical schools nationwide, this collective achievement highlights the caliber, character, and leadership of our student body on the national stage. These scholars embody the core tenets of osteopathic medicine and reflect UNE COM’s mission to train physicians who will lead and transform healthcare.

It is my distinct privilege to inform the University of New England community that Julia M. Balboni has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 David M. Biondi, DO Award for Excellence in Research.

The David M. Biondi, DO Award for Excellence in Research—formerly the UNE COM Research Excellence Graduation Award—is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to advancing medical science. This honor recognizes students who position themselves at the forefront of their graduating class through distinguished publications, impactful presentations, and sustained engagement in complex biomedical or clinical research. The award is named in honor of Dr. David M. Biondi (UNE COM ’85), currently the Vice President of Clinical Development at Alder Biopharmaceuticals. Dr. Biondi has built an illustrious career in academia and the pharmaceutical industry, leading critical clinical trials in headache and pain disorders. His work is highly regarded for addressing complex clinical issues, from chronic migraine management to the economic burden of patient side effects.

Doctor Balboni has established herself as a prolific and impactful contributor to orthopedic surgery research, with a particular emphasis on foot and ankle sports medicine and surgical outcomes. Her recent work is highlighted by her leadership in international consensus statements and systematic reviews published in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, and Arthroscopy. Beyond sports traumatology, Doctor Balboni has contributed significantly to surgical safety and rehabilitation, investigating the neurologic complications of peripheral nerve blocks and the efficacy of blood flow restriction therapy on muscle strength recovery. Her portfolio demonstrates impressive versatility, spanning from technical surgical approaches in lumbar spine access to the psychological impact of scoliosis bracing in adolescents. Based on the impressive body of work Doctor Balboni conducted here at UNE COM, we are certain that she will continue to advance research and patient-centered care throughout her career.

Please join us in commending Doctor Balboni’s dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and her significant contributions to the research community at UNE COM and the broader medical field.
