I legitimately almost died‼️ READ👇🏼
I was hog hunting early this morning while with my pastors cohort in Georgia. I’d been sitting in a ground blind for about 2½ hours when I finally stepped outside to p*e.

I took one step out and heard something move directly beside me. I turned around and saw a snake right next to the door I had just walked through. Now I have a BIG PROBLEM… My gun is still inside.

I had no way back in through the door, so I took a running start, jumped up to one of the small windows, and somehow pulled myself through. Once I was back inside, I tried throwing things at the snake hoping it would move away from the door…It wouldn’t move.

I set my phone up to record because I knew if it disappeared, nobody would believe how close it had been. That’s when it happened.

The snake lunged at me. I jumped backward and fired. The first shot missed. The second didn’t.

When the guys picked me up, I was still shook and trying to explain what happened. Then they walked over to see what kind of snake it was....A Diamondback rattlesnake.

One of the most venomous snakes in North America. I was deep in the woods with absolutely no cell service. I keep thinking about that first step out of the blind. I never even saw it. And somehow, it never struck.

A week ago I flew to Dallas and got to spend some time with Ed Newton and Josh Howerton, two men I genuinely get to call friends. Our time was full of laughs, tears, heart checks, celebrating each other, and mutual sharpening; which got me thinking…

For the first 10–12 years of pastoring, I was just grinding. Trying to stay faithful, find my voice as a preacher, solidify my theology, build a philosophy of ministry, battling my own demons, and trying to work out who The Lord had made me to be all while planting Netcast Church.

I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, never went to seminary, and didn’t have a long list of pastors speaking into my life. So when I find myself in rooms like this, there’s still a part of me that thinks, “How in the world am I here?” ….And the answer is simply, grace.

Over the last few years, Jesus has brought some incredible men into my life who encourage me, challenge me, and believe in me from a far. As my circle begins to broaden, I’m learning that sometimes God’s kindness is most clearly seen in the people He randomly puts in your life. Humbled by these new friendships and beyond grateful for the love we share!

Every pastor has that moment where something comes out of your mouth and immediately you think, “Yeah… I’d like that one back.” 😳

It’s even worse when you’re the guest preacher at somebody else’s church. (Thanks James Griffin and Crosspoint City Church)

For context…my daughter Ella (ella chewning) is one of the funniest, and most joyful people I know. Whenever I ask her to do something around the house, she’ll jokingly say, “Whatever Daddy wants, Daddy gets.” 😂😂😂

So apparently, while preaching, my brain decided THAT was the phrase we needed. 🤦‍♂️

Not my best moment, definitely a good laugh, but probably a phrase I’ll keep at home from now on‼️

For almost two decades, we’ve been boys.

From being called by King Jesus into ministry, to planting our churches, to raising our kids… we’ve shared a brotherhood that time and distance have only strengthened.

We’ve fought to faithfully proclaim the gospel. Been in each other’s homes. Loved each other’s kids. Laughed together. Cried together. Shared stages. Cared for each other’s hearts. Challenged each other. Prayed for each other. And loved each other through a whole lot of life.

So I’m grateful to the 2819 CHURCH team, Josh Howerton, and the Live Free crew for helping pull this reunion together. The time wasn’t nearly enough, but it was enough for some sweet prayer, mutual encouragement, intentional heart-checking, good laughs, and a whole lot of love.

Whenever we’re together, the Apostle Paul’s words resonate deeply: “I thank my God… because of your partnership in the gospel.” — Philippians 1:3–5

Almost 20 years later, and that’s still the only thing that matters. The love runs deep Philip Anthony Mitchell 🖤

Heading to Atlanta area this weekend to be with my friends at Crosspoint City Church. I’ll be speaking at Closer 2026 on Saturday night. I absolutely love how Jesus is using this church and my guy James Griffin.

Also, I can’t wait to be in a gym with Carlos Fernandez 🏀
