Miyoshi Umeki and Sessue Hayakawa’s Oscar nominations for 'Sayonara' and 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' mark the first time the supporting performance categories included nominees of Asian descent.
Miyoshi went on to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘Sayonara’ and became the first Asian performer to win an Academy Award.

Loretta Young with the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the political comedy The Farmer's Daughter. Loretta played Katrin Holstrom, a daughter of an American/Swedish family who starts out working as a maid for a powerful political family and ends up in Congress herself.
Loretta went on to earn one more Oscar nomination at the 22nd Academy Awards for her performances as Sister Margaret in ‘Come to the Stable.’

Greer Garson with her Best Actress Oscar for the romantic war drama ""Mrs. Miniver."" That evening, Garson made history by delivering a seven minute speech which, to this day, remains the longest Oscars speech in the history of the Academy Awards. Unfortunately, only portions of Garson’s address (three minutes and 56 seconds) were preserved.
