Your reformer is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your studio. Know what you’re buying.
When I started my career, I had Merrithew equipment in my studio alongside Balanced Body—and Merrithew was responsible for some important innovations in reformer design, including placing the carriage wheels inside the track so the carriage couldn’t lift out of the frame. They were also early innovators with the rebounder-style jump board.
But every piece of equipment has trade-offs.
One important detail with Merrithew reformers: the carriage is roughly 1½ inches shorter than many other reformers. That may not sound significant—until you regularly teach clients who are 6 feet and taller.
Today, there seems to be a new reformer manufacturer every week. Do your due diligence. Get on the equipment. Move it. Teach on it. Understand the dimensions, mechanics and limitations before investing in an entire studio.
You can try many of the latest equipment options at the Pilates Journal Expo in Miami, September 11–13.
I’m also sharing more in-depth equipment reviews on my subscription page, along with workshop discounts, livestream classes, behind-the-scenes access to my studio, and insights from the Pilates injury cases I’ve worked on as an expert witness.
Pretty equipment is everywhere. Great equipment is in the details.
Bodyline Pilates
Bodyline Pilates of Beverly Hills is the nations premier Pilates teacher training and Pilates teacher certification program.
Bodyline Pilates is LA's premier Pilates Certification studio. We offer year round courses for Pilates Instructors. Bodyline Pilates Certification is accepted nationwide and highly recognized by Pilates Method Alliance. Master Pilates Instructor, Maria Leone, was recently featured in Pilates Style Magazine and a featured trainer on Pilates Anytime.
I can usually tell a great Pilates studio before I ever take a class.
I’ve always thought of a Pilates studio as a workshop. It’s where we practice and refine our craft, so there should be tools everywhere—but they should be there with purpose.
The two studios I taught at in Europe were beautiful, fresh and completely different from one another. Both had their own personality, and both were led by studio owners who are experienced teachers themselves.
They also showcased some of the best equipment in our industry.
And I noticed something else: fewer mirrors.
Instead of constantly seeing an image reflected back at you, you’re encouraged to pay attention to what you’re feeling, how you’re moving and what the work is asking of you.
Your Pilates studio doesn’t have to look like everybody else’s.
In fact, I don’t think it should.
I am just planning 2027 now. Please reach out if you would like to collaborate.

A new flow for them—and a new way of seeing for me, teaching on completely new bodies. Keeping the cues simple, the setups clear, and staying present with what’s actually in front of me. This is the work that matters. And yes, you can learn it too.

It takes a lot of effort—but how do we build the skills to make it look effortless? That’s where the advanced work lives. Tulsi, a professional dancer, has spent years refining that level of control, long before her Pilates training. She recently passed her final exam and is now a Balanced Body certified instructor and part of the Bodyline team—catch her on Mon/Tues/Wed for classes and privates.
Now back to you. Share your thoughts — I’m especially curious about out-of-the-box ideas.

Burnout is real—but curiosity is the cure.
After 38 years of teaching, I don’t stay inspired by doing the same workout over and over. I stay inspired by giving myself new challenges.
Can you teach an entire session on the Chair? On the Mat? Without a Reformer? Can you help a client who can’t lie down, can’t stand, can’t flex, or can’t extend their spine? These aren’t situations to fear—they’re skills to practice before you need them.
The best teachers don’t memorize exercises. They learn how to think.
That’s the heart of the Bodyline Method: building adaptable, confident instructors who can teach any body, in any environment.

For nearly three decades, Bodyline has blended the timeless principles of Pilates with thoughtful, evidence-informed movement. Our foundation is traditional Pilates, but our classes also explore strength, mobility, athletic performance, and jump training when appropriate.
Every instructor on our team has been trained in the Bodyline Method®, and we’re proud to have three Master Trainers who help maintain the highest teaching standards—including Miku Yoshida .
Whether you’re looking for group classes, private sessions for injuries or specific goals, or the flexibility to join from anywhere through our interactive livestreams, you’ll receive expert coaching and real-time feedback.

We don’t always teach the full expression of Control Facing Back—but we teach what builds it. Strength, shoulder stability, load through the hands, and real control through complex movement. Without the foundation, it gets confusing. And a reminder, Instagram isn’t education—it’s just a glimpse. This is from a private session with teacher trainer Tulsi and Lead Instructor Miku. They have been discussing a lot on how to teach Pilates as a method rather than a list of exercises. And the truth is, this takes a long time and you must work through it.
Miku and Colette will be leading Reformer 1 August 7-9. You can start here and join in studio or virtually (must have equipment).
