Six hours a day in one language. Spanish never stood a chance against those numbers.

For a long time, I blamed myself for the language drift. I felt like I was losing a piece of our identity every time he responded in English.

But then I realized: it wasn’t a lack of effort; it was the environment. Traditional school accelerates that language drift because it forces a single-language dominance for most of the day.

When I finally stopped treating our heritage language like a “20-minute elective” and started building our entire life rhythm around it, the shift was magic.

Seeing him answer me in Spanish for the first time in months? That wasn’t just language; that was connection.
