Friday Classical Focus: What is Classical Christian Education?
Classical Christian education seeks to form wise and faithful people, not merely students who can pass tests. It draws upon the long tradition of Western education while placing Jesus Christ at the center of all truth, goodness, and beauty. Every subject belongs to God because he created and sustains the world we study.
The word classical refers partly to the content students encounter: enduring works of literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, science, music, and art. It also describes a method. Younger students build a rich foundation of knowledge. Older students learn to reason carefully about that knowledge and then communicate truth persuasively and graciously. These stages are often called grammar, logic, and rhetoric.
Christian means more than beginning class with prayer or adding Bible lessons to an otherwise ordinary program. Scripture gives the school its understanding of the child, the world, knowledge, virtue, and the purpose of life. Teachers help students see the unity of truth and ask how each lesson fits within God’s created order.
The goal is therefore larger than college preparation or career readiness, though both matter. We want students who can recognize what is true, love what is good, delight in what is beautiful, and act with courage and charity. Classical Christian education prepares children to live thoughtfully and faithfully before God in every calling he gives them.
