Cantaloupe grows in direct contact with the ground, making it susceptible to contamination from soil, water, and animals. In addition, the rough texture of the cantaloupe rind is an inviting place for bacteria to grow. Thoroughly washing and scrubbing with a produce brush before cutting or serving helps prevent bacteria from being transferred to the fruit's flesh, reducing the risk of foodborne illness. Learn more about how to properly wash cantaloupe from this video: go.iastate.edu/DMT9VI
