Too many times, I work with children in grades 2/3 who have no idea what simply sounding out a word means and it breaks my heart.

This is the last day with this kiddo. A model student, in every way. Reads above grade level (5th), does fantastic in school, but his mom knew something was wrong. His spelling wasn’t where it should be. His issue was orthographic mapping, not easy to diagnose. He has all the tools now.
Also, I got flowers 💐 ☺️

If you, as the parent, feel like your child is falling behind, it’s because they are…leveled reading means your child is memorizing words. Direct, explicit instruction, sound/symbol connections, and orthographic mapping is scientifically the only way a child learns to read. Period.
