The NMJL card isn’t as complicated as it looks. 👀🀄️

Once you learn how to read the National Mah Jongg League Official Standard Hands & Rules Card, you have the key to the game—and that skill doesn’t expire when the new card comes out every April.

The secret? Understanding the 3 big components of the card:

🎨 Colors = a change in suit, not necessarily an actual suit.
( ) Parentheses = the rules and flexibility that apply to each hand.
📖 Sections = understanding the rules of each section helps you quickly narrow down where to look based on the tiles in your hand.

Once these pieces click, the card starts to make SO much more sense. 🙌

Learn the card—not just the current hands—and you’ll be ready for every new card that comes.

Ready to take your American Mahjong skills to the next level? One of the most important skills you can develop is learning to read the table—especially the clues your opponents reveal through their exposed tiles.

Those exposures can give you valuable information about what hands they may be working toward. The more you practice recognizing these patterns, the easier it becomes to narrow down their possibilities and make smarter decisions in your own game.

Take a close look at the exposure in this carousel and make your best guess before revealing the answer. What clues did you notice? What possibilities did you rule in or out?
