Lehigh’s Community Service Office pulled out all the stops and with the help of some beautiful campus partners collected, sorted, packed up and unpacked gigantic piles of generous donations for today’s amazing Great South Side Sale.

It was extremely hot weather and we are ecstatically thankful for everyone who came to shop today, and to our volunteers.

The sale brought in nearly $27,000 that will go directly to programming for our South Side Kiddos!

Meet Israel Wachs— G. Whitney Snyder Distinguished Professor for P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, National Academy of Engineering member and a driving force behind Lehigh’s elite R1 research status.

Wachs pioneered "operando" spectroscopy, a groundbreaking method that allows his team to watch chemical reactions happen at the molecular level in real time. By mapping how catalysts behave under real reaction conditions, his lab is engineering real-world solutions to massive environmental and energy challenges—from creating sustainable green fuels to transforming toxic air pollutants into harmless water and nitrogen.

What does research with real-world impact actually look like?

Chemical engineering major Lillian Wu ’27 has been named a Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation’s top honors for undergraduate researchers in STEM. Her work studying antibiotic resistance is helping to shape future breakthroughs in medicine and public health.

Wu’s recognition makes her the second Lehigh student in as many years to receive the honor, joining a growing legacy of student-led discovery that reflects the university’s R1 designation and expanding research enterprise.

We’re proud to celebrate Lehigh students pushing discovery forward. Today, as we honor the brave men and women who have served our nation, we also look forward to the next generation of leadership. 🇺🇸

With that, we extend huge congratulations to the senior cadets of the Steel Battalion, who officially took their statutory oaths of office and were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army!

Last week's ceremony in Packer Memorial Chapel marked the culmination of four years of rigorous academic study, grueling physical training, and exceptional leadership development. The pinning of the gold bars and the rendering of the traditional first salute are powerful milestones as these new officers prepare to lead soldiers and serve the nation proudly.

Thank you to our veterans and congratulations to our newly commissioned Second Lieutenants!

At Lehigh, community counts. Friendships are cultivated here that last a lifetime and it fills our hearts, and campus, with joy.

Take it from Julie Wright ’25 M’26 and Rhema Hooper ’26, who met at the Lehigh Fest Merit Scholarship dinner as high school seniors.

Since then, the two have supported each other on their academic journeys and research endeavors as community and global health majors, building a friendship and a record of global impact through research, advocacy and community.

For Wright and Hooper, navigating their paths together has been the biggest highlight: https://news.lehigh.edu/community-and-global-health-majors-research-cobalt-mining-permaculture-and-attend-model-world?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ucpa-social&utm_content=feed
