Happy Founder's Day Brothers of the Eta!

Happy 134th Anniversary to the Eta chapter at Lehigh University, Founded February 22nd, 1884.

The Chapter was originally conceived after George Leighton, Eta 1883, noticed the fraternity badge on a new professor, Henry C. Johnson, Chi 1873 (Cornell) at the campus chapel. Brother Leighton approached the new professor about starting a chapter at Lehigh as his twin brother, James Leighton, Beta 1881, was a member of the Beta Chapter at Yale. Professor Johnson was doubtful at first (he said "there was about as much chance as being struck by lightening") but after speaking with a fellow brother, Walter Freeman, Chi '83, he asked George Leighton to put together a list of students to approach for membership, and the Eta Chapter was soon born...

Happy Founders Day brothers!

Happy 133rd Anniversary to the Eta Chapter at Lehigh University, founded February 22, 1884. The beginning of the chapter dates back to a conversation between Henry Johnson, Chi 1873 (Cornell), a professor at Lehigh, and a student George Leighton, Eta '83, whose twin brother James was a member of the Beta Chapter at Yale. The story from the "Annals of Psi Upsilon" states that George saw Professor Johnson's badge at a Sunday service in 1880 and "He asked Professor Johnson whether there was any chance of obtaining a chapter at Lehigh and received the answer that there was about as much a chance of bring struck by lightening." Professor Johnson did speak to some other brothers soon after and reached out to George Leighton to get a list of potential founders. George gave him 12 names, 9 of which became founding fathers of the Eta Chapter.
