“For years, behavioral parent training has been recommended as a first-line treatment for young children with ADHD. But recommending a service is not the same as making it available,” write professors George DuPaul and Lee Kern in this Patriot News opinion piece. “In a forthcoming study, we will report that an online behavioral parent-training program for families of young children with ADHD yields results comparable to traditional face-to-face treatment. That should matter to pediatricians, schools, and policymakers, but most of all to parents seeking practical help.” Read more on the Patriot News website at https://bit.ly/4egr750.

A forthcoming study from Lehigh University College of Education researchers George J. DuPaul and Lee Kern finds that an online parent training program for families of young children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be as effective as traditional in-person treatment.

The study, Face-to-Face vs. Online Behavioral Parent Training for Young Children with ADHD: Child and Parent Outcomes, focused on PEAK (Promoting Engagement for ADHD pre-Kindergartners), a 10-session behavioral parent training program developed for caregivers of children ages 3 to 6 with ADHD. The program teaches parents and caregivers practical strategies they can use at home and in the community to support their child’s behavior, reduce conflict, and improve daily routines.

The findings are important because behavioral parent training is recommended as a first-line treatment for young children with ADHD, but many families cannot access it because of therapist shortages, cost, transportation, childcare, work schedules, or the challenge of attending regular clinic appointments. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends behavioral parent training like PEAK as a first-line treatment that should be tried before medication for young children with ADHD.

“Parents are often told that behavioral parent training should be the first step, but too many families never get a real opportunity to try it,” said DuPaul, professor and associate director of the Center for Community-Driven Assistive Technologies at Lehigh University. “This study shows that we may be able to bring evidence-based support to families in a way that fits their lives.” Read more at https://bit.ly/3PQD09S.

What is a behavior analyst?

Behavior analysts use behavior assessments and evidence-based interventions to improve the lives of people with behavioral issues and contribute to the overall well-being of diverse communities.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) grants a widely recognized certification to individuals who pass the qualifying exam and meet all requirements.

The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level certification. BCBAs are independent practitioners and may also supervise technicians, assistant analysts, and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions.

"Laws create expectations, but they don’t teach children to read. People do." 🧵👇

In the latest Teach Magazine, Ethan VanNorman weighs in on PA's Act 47 and the shift toward evidence-based reading instruction.

Act 47 brings much-needed consistency by requiring:
✅ Evidence-based practices in K-3
✅ Student screening 3x a year
✅ Structured literacy training for teachers

But passing a law doesn't solve the problem on its own. True success depends on how we support our educators to turn policy into classroom reality.

For Liz Sims, a doctoral student in the COE's Educational Leadership program, the blank walls of Iacocca Hall provided inspiration. Sims, who teaches art full-time at Valley Forge Elementary, recognized an opportunity to bridge the gap between the COE’s graduate training and the creative energy of local K-12 classrooms.

The idea for a K-12 Art Exhibition started with a single door. When Dr. Craig Hochbein invited Sims to display some of her students' work outside his office, he sparked Sims' imagination. "I came back a few months later with a proposal to fill the entire hallway."

Her idea, met with enthusiastic support from Dean Robin Hojnoski, led to a college-wide installation. The exhibition now winds through two floors, turning once bleak hallways into a celebration of local K-12 artists.

"As a doctoral student myself, I wanted to include other grad students and their schools. Dr. Hojnoski agreed, so we chose the inaugural group of participants specifically to support the arts in COE graduate students' districts," Sims said. It is Sims' hope that current and future teachers enrolled in the COE's programs will be inspired—not just by the work, but what the work represents. And when current COE students land in their post-graduate school districts, her hope is they'll want to be part of future exhibitions.

"I hope this is just the beginning," Sims said. "I want to see this grow each year, featuring more schools and more of the remarkable things students create when given the chance."
