Our toddler and primary classes have been quietly working behind the scenes, creating artwork inspired by Piet Mondrian. For our primary-aged children, the inspiration began in their classrooms with explorations of primary colors everywhere, while our little ones drew inspiration from the changing seasons.
Bravo to our wonderful Montessori teams who quietly guided the children to produce their inspired masterpieces.
All in all, it was a wonderfully artsy day for Fernwood children and families alike.

Flamingos - when you hear that, you think pink color birds, standing on one leg while sleeping, and long necks.
Well, a few of Fernwood lower elementary students did a research projects on these birds, and these are the facts they came up with. Enjoy learning about these unique birds🦩

Today our school celebrated not just moms, but dads too, on Parents’ Day. Our tables were set up with projects for children to do with both parents, along with some delicious snacks. It was a beautiful day to celebrate our families, spend quality time together, and bond with our wonderful community.

Fernwood Montessori welcomed some very special visitors today—Fangs, frogs, and more!
Our students had an exciting hands-on experience learning about reptiles and amphibians. They bravely touched and observed a blue tongue skink, bullfrog, tarantula, red-eared tortoise, ball python, and king snake—and were especially amazed by a scorpion that glows under UV light!
The children were full of curiosity, excitement, and wonder as they explored these incredible creatures. We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation during circle time as they share their observations and questions.
What an unforgettable day of discovery! 🌿

In a Montessori classroom, every activity has a purpose.
When children stack blocks to build a tower, draw and color, sort objects by color, carry a tray with care, cut along a line, match picture cards, pour or spoon, or prepare and share fruits and vegetables, they are doing much more than simple tasks.
They are developing independence, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and building focus and concentration. They are creating a sense of inner order, learning to care for their environment and themselves, and refining both balance and movement. At the same time, they are enhancing fine motor and gross motor skills.
These activities are not random—they are intentional and thoughtfully designed, grounded in research and best practices in child development.
This is Montessori in action.

Fernwood Montessori has had a wonderful last couple of weeks.
Starting with a successful ex*****on of elementary bazaar and raising almost thousand dollars for the Potomac Riverkeepers, to getting our American Montessori Society (AMS) accreditation to attending an invigorating Montessori conference at the DC convention and meeting fellow teachers, educators, mentors, administrators.
This has been a time to experience and reenergized ourselves. We are grateful and humbled by AMS recognizing our program as a great Montessori program.
