Cheers to 7 Years 🥂

Seven years ago, Dr. Ianessa Humbert and SLP Rinki Varindani Desai launched with no roadmap, no investors, and no business experience - just a deep belief (and data) to support that dysphagia education needed to change.💡

What started as an idea between a clinician and researcher both passionate about swallowing disorders, is now a global leader in dysphagia training and education, with 42,000+ learners, 150+ university partnerships, 40,000+ hours of content watched, and thousands of patients receiving better care. 💛

Building something that lasts is never easy. Building it as women, immigrants, and bootstrapped founders? The odds were even steeper. And yet - here we are! 🙏

In honor of 7 years, here are 7 lessons that have shaped STEP and our community:

🎯 Mission – A strong “why” is everything. We are obsessed with the problem we’re trying to solve. Every decision we make comes back to who we serve and how we can make dysphagia education better.

💬 Communication – We’ve spent more years building STEP than we have spent days in the same room. But distance doesn’t matter because strong partnerships are built on open communication, transparency, mutual respect, and trust.

🚀 Ex*****on – Ideas don’t build companies — action does. We build, test, and iterate, rather than waiting for the perfect product or plan. Progress is better than perfect.

💪 Resilience – Entrepreneurship is isolating and challenging. There are times when quitting seems easier. But we keep showing up! We have pushed through doubt, failures, and roadblocks because the work we do matters and the impact is real.

💡 Innovation – isn’t about what exists — it’s about reimagining what’s possible. Dysphagia education needed to be better. Clinicians had complained about feeling unprepared for years. Research existed in silos and continuing education was expensive. We questioned outdated methods and decided to build something better. When the solution doesn’t exist - create it!

🔄 Adaptability – The best ideas evolve. We have pivoted, let go of what doesn’t align with our mission, and kept moving forward. Being flexible to adapt to changing learner needs is key to growth.

📚 Mindset – We didn’t start with all the answers, and never will. Curiosity and a growth mindset keep us constantly creating and learning. We believe in staying open, curious, and humble.

Every course we build and every decision we make comes back to our why - providing better care to patients and better training for the clinicians who serve them.
