Oak cabinets with the cathedral arch doors. Beige tile counters with grout that gave up being white a decade ago. A fluorescent box on the ceiling that makes your morning coffee look gray. Sheet vinyl in a pattern nobody chose.
If your home was built between 1983 and 1997 in Montgomery County, Fairfax, Howard, or anywhere in the DMV, your kitchen probably looks exactly like this.
Builders bought materials in bulk and installed the same package across entire subdivisions. Same cabinets, same tile, same lighting, same brass pulls, 50-200 homes at a time. Your kitchen wasn’t designed. It was installed.
You don’t have to rip the whole thing out to make it feel different.
Paint the cabinets: $3K-$6K. New countertops: $3K-$8K. Replace the fluorescent box: $800-$2,500. New floor: $2K-$5K. New hardware: $150-$400.
Each one stands alone. Each one makes the next easier to picture.
And if the whole room needs to go, we do that too — gut renovations with the 30% rule to make sure you’re spending smart, not just spending.

First impressions matter! Look at this incredible front entrance upgrade.
Take a look at the process behind this custom brick walkway we recently completed. At Blue Collar Scholars, our masonry team specializes in high-end hardscaping that completely transforms the look of a property.
For this project, we designed a sweeping, curved walkway using a classic herringbone brick pattern. The "during" photos show the structural foundation of the build—we constructed a sturdy brick retaining wall to frame the path and hold the grade perfectly. After establishing a solid, leveled base, we laid the intricate brickwork to create a flawless transition from the driveway right up to the front door.
A custom brick walkway is not just beautiful; it is an incredibly durable investment that will last for decades while significantly increasing your home's value.

Your home was built with a drainage system. Three parts, all buried underground, all designed to keep water away from your foundation.
Drain pipes at the base of the foundation catch underground water and redirect it. Gutter pipes carry roof runoff away from the house through buried lines. The ground was sloped so surface water flows away from the walls, not toward them.
When your home was built, all three worked. After 50+ years of settling, root growth, and zero maintenance, all three are probably failing.
The drain pipes are packed with mud and roots. The gutter pipes are crushed or disconnected. The soil has gone flat or tilted back toward the house. Three things that were supposed to work together, all breaking down at once, all invisible until your basement gets wet.

Is your old wooden deck becoming a safety hazard?
Take a look at this incredible tear-down and rebuild we just wrapped up! The "during" photos show exactly why this project was necessary. The original wooden deck was heavily weathered, rotting, and no longer safe for the family to use.
Our crew at Blue Collar Scholars safely demolished the failing structure and started completely from scratch. We built a robust, code-compliant pressure-treated frame designed for maximum stability. To top it off, we installed a beautiful, two-tone composite deck surface with a custom picture-frame edge and clean white railings.
The final result is a stunning, highly durable outdoor entertainment space that requires absolutely zero painting or staining. Stop spending your summers patching up an old wooden deck. Send Blue Collar Scholars a direct message today to schedule your free composite deck consultation!

Is your wooden deck too hot to walk on this July?
Swipe to learn exactly why your pressure-treated deck surface is hitting 140°F and why it is time to consider a modern upgrade.
Wood absorbs and traps solar radiation, making it dangerously hot for bare feet—especially for kids and pets. Even worse, the relentless UV rays and thermal cycling actually destroy the wood’s internal structure over time, leading to cupping, splintering, and that faded gray look.
The permanent solution is premium composite decking. As certified Trex and Azek installers, we build with advanced boards that feature a reflective polymer shell. This drops the surface temperature by up to 30 degrees compared to wood! It easily passes the barefoot test, requires zero staining, and comes with a 25 to 50-year warranty.

Swipe to see the complete before and after of this recent fence installation by Blue Collar Scholars. The original fence was short, leaning, and failing to provide any real privacy from the alleyway for this urban lot.
We tore it down and built a custom, pressure-treated wood privacy fence from scratch. By utilizing heavy-duty framing and tall, tightly spaced pickets, we completely transformed the space. Look at how much cleaner, safer, and more secluded this entire patio area feels now!

Are you dealing with a flooded yard because of your neighbor's new hardscaping?
Adding a new patio or driveway means adding impervious surfaces that no longer absorb rainwater. That water has to go to the lowest nearby point, which is frequently your yard.
In Montgomery County, stormwater management regulations state that runoff from new impervious surfaces must be managed on the property where they were created. If a neighbor installs a patio without proper drainage, they can violate county code and be held responsible for downstream damage.
Before arguing about fault or calling a lawyer, you need engineering data to document the actual water flow. Here is how we solve it:
- We evaluate the grade change and map the runoff source.
- We install a dry well system along the property line to intercept the water before it crosses into your yard.
- Surface water is routed into a buried infiltration chamber where it slowly disperses into the subsoil.
A dry well and catch basin system typically costs $4K to $10K for a DMV lot. This one-time fix is much cheaper than foundation repairs, which start at $25K, or lengthy legal disputes.
