Mr. Grosshandler was the associate lead investigator into the technical investigation of the collapse of the World Trade Center, and is hoping to give insight into how engineers conduct disaster investigations.
Below is a full resume! He attended UC Berkeley for a PhD, and worked at Washington State University as a professor.
Dr. William L. Grosshandler was the Deputy Director for Building and Fire Research of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) up until his retirement in 2012. Dr. Grosshandler was responsible for internal operations of the Laboratory, which deals with construction and materials research, building environment research, and fire research. Dr. Grosshandler led the NIST investigation of The Station nightclub (Warwick, RI) fire and was the associate lead investigator of the National Building and Fire Safety Investigation of the World Trade Center Disaster. He is currently a Guest Researcher at NIST.
Dr. Grosshandler received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to his appointment at NIST, he spent three years as the Director of the Thermal Systems Program of the National Science Foundation. At the same time, he maintained his position as Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University, where he had been since 1976. He has also held visiting appointments at Factory Mutual Research Corporation (now FM Global) and the University of Poitiers in France.
Dr. Grosshandler has served on the Board of Directors of the Combustion Institute, the editorial advisory board of Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, advisory boards for the Fire Protection Engineering Departments at the University of Maryland and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the Research Advisory Committee of the Fire Protection Research Foundation, and is active in the Heat Transfer Division and a Fellow of ASME. He chaired the International Forum of Fire Research Directors from 2005 to 2011, served on the Fire Council for Underwriters Laboratory, and for ten years was a member of the Science Advisory Committee of the National Association of State Fire Marshals. He is currently on the District of Columbia Dept. of Forensic Sciences Science Advisory Board. Dr. Grosshandler is a recipient of two Silver Medals for meritorious achievement and a Gold Medal for distinguished achievement in federal service from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

On December 4th, Friday, the Walt WhitmanEngineering Society will be hosting Greg Bartolomei. Greg is currently Director of Engineering at Eaton, a global technology leader in power management solutions that make electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical power operate more efficiently, reliably, and sustainably. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UMD and holds a Master's degree in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Mr. Kester has a background in Math, Computer Science, and satellite building! The event will only take 30 minutes, 15 minutes of a presentation and 15 minutes of Q&A, out of your lunch and you can eat while he presents.

The Walt Whitman Engineering Society will best hosting Mr. Kester, a Computer Science and Math major, during 5th lunch in D-308 and 6th lunch in D-213 on November 4th. Mr. Kester has worked at UMD, General Electric, and the John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. He will giving a short presentation on his career and then will be open to questions! This is a great opportunity for students interested in business, computer science, or are interested in learning more! November 4th, 5th lunch in D-308 and 6th lunch in D-213! Mr Kester's career has evolved as the computer technology industry has evolved. His BS is in Computer Science & Math. His Masters is in Business Administration with emphasis on Quantitative Methods. His career started at the University of Maryland Administrative Computer Center while a student and became full-time after graduation. He left UMD to work for General Electric programming for the Landsat (now Earth Observation System) satellite ground station. He has designed & programmed for multiple military & aerospace contracts. Based on experience in the military & aerospace industry, his career transitioned from a Software Engineer to a System Engineer working for GTE, CSC, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Mr. Kester's current job is with Wyle working in the Program Office for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). While working on JSF, his career transitioned from Software Systems Engineering to System Security Engineering (aka CyberSecurity).
