I had the honor of throwing out the first pitch at an American Legion Post 555 Girls Fastpitch Softball game, and what a memorable experience!

There’s something special about stepping onto the field and supporting young athletes who are building confidence, discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

It was also a reminder that leadership is developed in many places, not just the workplace. Sometimes it starts on a softball field, where young people learn how to show up, work together, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

I’m grateful to American Legion Post 555 for the opportunity to be part of such a special moment.

While walking near my hotel this week, I noticed something I wasn’t expecting: a bee apiary tucked beside the parking lot.

Curious, I stopped to read the signs and learn more about the queen bee, worker bees, drone bees, and the Corporate Hive Program that maintains the hives.
One statement caught my attention:

“The Bee Downtown Corporate Hive Program creates experiences that allow employees to uniquely engage with bees, agriculture, each other, and their workplace.”

The more I thought about it, the more I realized the lesson wasn’t really about bees.
It was about connection.
Connection to purpose.
Connection to each other.
Connection to something bigger than ourselves.

Inside a hive, every bee has a role. The queen, workers, and drones all contribute differently, yet each plays an important part in the success of the colony.

The hive thrives not because every bee does the same thing, but because each one contributes what it was uniquely designed to contribute.

The same is true in our workplaces, organizations, and communities.
Many leaders focus on productivity, performance, and outcomes. Those things matter. But people are often asking a deeper question:

“Do I matter here?”

When people understand their role, feel connected to the mission, and know their contributions are valued, engagement becomes more than a metric—it becomes a natural outcome.

As I walked away from those hives, I found myself reflecting on a simple question:
Am I spending more time trying to do everything, or am I focused on contributing what only I can contribute?

Sometimes the most powerful leadership lessons show up in the most unexpected places.
