This morning, after working with my personal trainer at the YMCA, I took a walk around the detention pond near the entrance.

Like many people, I've passed detention ponds countless times without giving them much thought. But today, curiosity got the better of me, and I learned that their purpose is not to stop the rain—it’s to temporarily hold excess water and release it slowly to prevent flooding and protect everything downstream.

As I continued walking, I couldn't help but think about how often we face our own storms.

A difficult conversation.
A disappointing email.
An unexpected setback.
A packed schedule.
A major life transition.

Our natural tendency is often to react immediately—to solve, respond, fix, or push through.

But perhaps the better question is:
Do I need to react right now, or do I need to process first?

The most effective leaders I've encountered don't suppress pressure, nor do they dump it on everyone around them. They create space to process what they're experiencing before deciding how to respond.

Like a detention pond, they:
✅ Hold what needs to be held
✅ Create space for clarity
✅ Release thoughtfully rather than impulsively
✅ Protect what matters most downstream

I've found that some of my best decisions come after a walk, prayer, reflection, journaling, or simply giving myself permission not to respond immediately.

Sometimes wisdom isn't found in speed.

Sometimes it's found in the pause.

What helps you process pressure before responding?
I'd love to hear what practices help you create space between a challenge and your response.

Jet lag is finally beginning to loosen its grip!✈️

Coming back from Paris reminded me how often we expect ourselves to bounce back instantly after something significant ends. A project finishes, a season shifts, a challenge passes, and we think we should be “back to normal” right away.

But growth and recovery are rarely immediate. Jet lag fades slowly. One better night of sleep. A bit more energy. A moment of clarity. Until one day you realize you’re back.

Life works the same way. Burnout, transitions, new roles, rebuilding habits. Progress is often quieter than we expect.

You may not be where you want to be yet, but you are not where you started either.

If you’re in that in-between space, pay attention to what’s starting to loosen.

Your next leadership mistake might be made in the first 30 seconds.

When pressure hits, the instinct is often to react immediately. But the strongest leaders do not rush to respond. They create space to process first.

Before responding, they ask:
Do I need to react right now or do I need to process first?

The most effective leaders I have encountered do not suppress pressure and they do not dump it on everyone around them. They create space to understand what they are experiencing before deciding how to respond.

Like a detention pond, they

✅ Hold what needs to be held
✅ Create space for clarity
✅ Release thoughtfully rather than impulsively
✅ Protect what matters most downstream

Leadership is not about avoiding pressure. It is about managing it in a way that serves both people and outcomes.

Ever heard the phrase R.O.A.D. — Retired On Active Duty?

In the military, it describes someone who is still showing up but has quietly checked out. No urgency. No ownership. Just going through the motions.

We call it "quiet quitting" now, but the reality hasn't changed.

What I've learned is that most people don't disengage because they don't care. They disengage because something feels off. Sometimes it's burnout. Sometimes priorities aren't clear. Sometimes they feel overlooked. Other times they've simply lost sight of the impact they're making.

Before labeling it, it's worth asking a few questions. Am I protecting my energy, or am I slowly disconnecting? Is my team disengaged, or are they unclear, overwhelmed, and stretched thin?

Because quiet quitting isn't really the issue. It's a signal.

The better question is whether it's time to rest, realign, or re-engage differently. That's where the shift happens.

Paris reminded me that leadership is not always about moving faster. Sometimes the greatest growth comes from slowing down, gaining perspective, and reconnecting with purpose!

Travel has a way of teaching lessons that leadership requires every day: confidence, adaptability, self awareness, and clarity.

Through TWS Coaching & Consulting Group, I help professionals, executives, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders strengthen their mindset, leadership skills, and personal growth.

Paris was more than a destination. It was a reminder to lead with intention!✨

The ICF Converge Summit was a powerful reminder of the impact of shared growth, authentic connection, and purposeful leadership.

This experience provided the opportunity to reconnect with fellow coaches, build new relationships with professionals from around the world, and engage in meaningful conversations centered on leadership, organizational transformation, wellness, AI integration, neuroscience, and the future of coaching.

One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of maintaining human connection in an increasingly fast paced and AI driven world. The summit reinforced that sustainable leadership is rooted not only in strategy and performance, but also in trust, empathy, belonging, and creating psychologically safe spaces where individuals and teams can thrive.

Through workshops, discussions, keynote sessions, and collaborative learning, the experience emphasized the value of remaining adaptable, curious, and intentional as leaders and coaches.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow alongside such impactful professionals!

leadership isn’t about titles — it’s about transformation. 🎯

A great leadership coach doesn’t give you all the answers… they help you ask better questions, see your blind spots, and step into the kind of leader your team actually needs.

This is what we do at TWS Coaching — helping veterans, professionals, and leaders grow with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
