We're pleased to welcome Dave Limmer from Casper, Wyoming, who is doing a training for our ministry staff today. There are many more facets to recovery than just getting sober. In this series on "Training in Discipleship" Dave discusses walking people through practical inner healing tools—recognizing hurt versus sinful responses, forgiveness, breaking soul ties and generational patterns, and identifying "open doors" that leave people vulnerable to spiritual bo***ge. The session will close with topics on identity in Christ, the power of words and faith, and overcoming shame—helping people embrace their identity as beloved sons and daughters of God.

This morning, we have the joyful privilege of baptizing several people. To help us understand what we’re doing, let’s look at the story in the Book of Acts about Phillip and the Ethiopian eu**ch. In this story, after hearing the gospel, the eu**ch says, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” That’s a great question, and the answer helps us understand what baptism is all about and why it’s so important.

Acts 8:35-39 (ESV) Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eu**ch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eu**ch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eu**ch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.

We’re all called to step fully into our true identity in Christ, leaning entirely on His grace and power—but let’s be honest, every single one of us is still very much a work in progress.Yes, it is absolutely true that God's Kingdom is on the move. Lives are being transformed. Yet, when we get into the messy reality of becoming more like Jesus, what we see right in front of us doesn't always match the hope we carry for the future. That's why it is so vital that we walk by a deep, grounded faith, rather than just relying on what our eyes see or what makes sense to us in the moment. This everyday rhythm of walking by faith is exactly what Paul gets into in our short text today.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV) for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Join us this Sunday, August 9th, at Heartland Community Church as we celebrate with more men and women graduating from the Heartland Recovery Program. Pray for them that as they step into the next part of their recovery, they will continue to surround themselves with a great support system and continue to seek the Lord.

Today I want to end our series on Colossians 3 by continuing to understand what putting on the new self should look like in practice and how that should impact our lives together in the local church. How do we live out our daily lives to the fullest of what Christ has so graciously done for us and in us?

Colossians 3:10, 12-17 (ESV) and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator…12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Fully answering God's call takes real action. Now that we've been "raised with Christ," we have to intentionally make sure our daily habits match our new identity instead of our old, sinful one. This part of the study sets up a super relatable question: if we're genuinely saved and have a brand-new nature, why do we still mess up, and how can we practically leave our old selves behind?

Colossians 3:5-10 (ESV) Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
