Heartland Community Heartland is an intentional Christian community located in northeast Missouri.

At Heartland you'll find an intentional Christian community where men, women, and youth are finding hope in the power of Jesus Christ to change lives and restore families. Year-long recovery programs for men and women, along with a Children & Youth Home, Bible College, and a Church family provide opportunities for help, growth and discipleship. An intentional community is simply one that is built around a specific interest or goal (such as a golfing community, a retirement community, or an artist colony). Ours happens to be a group of people who believe Jesus is the answer to every issue we face – including addiction, anger, broken homes, and financial crises. Men and women who commit themselves to the process of restoration find help at Heartland through the power of God and the encouragement of people who have walked a similar path. Stephanie Barton is celebrating twenty years as a Heartland staff member, but her life in the community goes back much further. She came to Heartland at age 7 with some of her siblings and moved into the home of Pastor Charlie and Laurie Sharpe. She and her sister, Grecia, grew up in the Sharpe home, and they have now both established homes, families, and careers in Heartland.

Stephanie graduated from both Heartland Christian Academy and Heartland Christian College. Her first job was at the school in janitorial, then at the cafe before coming full circle, returning to HCA as an elementary teacher. Her touch for hospitality is evident in other areas of the school as well, as she organizes events and special ways to celebrate people.

Stephanie is married to Shelby County Deputy and school resource officer, Caleb Barton. They are raising their four children in Shelby County while remaining active in the Heartland school, church, and community. In her spare time, Stephanie somehow finds time to create delicious treats for her Wildflour Bakery farm stand.

CNS International Ministries congratulates Cali Ballard, who is celebrating twenty years as a staff member at Heartland. Cali came to the community in 1999 with her parents, Doyle and Velvet Branstetter, who were an important part of establishing Heartland in those early years. They served in both the school and the children’s homes. Cali has followed in their footsteps.

She graduated from Heartland Christian College, then pursued a nursing degree from HLGU. Through various seasons of her employment, Cali has done everything from feeding people at the Cafe to working with youth, teaching art, nursing, coaching, and serving as a respite parent. Today Cali serves as the school nurse and Dean of Administration of HCA, among other hats.

Cali is married to fellow HCC graduate, Daniel Ballard, and they continue to serve together in the church and the community. In 2014, their daughter, Fran, joined their family while they were house parents. Daniel and Cali are also travel buddies whose adventures have taken them on missions trips and cross-country treks.

Thank you, Cali, for your heart and passion to serve others.

Today we are excited to graduate six residents from the Heartland Recovery program. Pastor Kris will share a short message for the graduates, and also for us as a Church. "Right is right, and wrong is wrong. There is no middle ground. It’s always right to do right. There is no gray in God. This means there is no other way but Jesus."

Text: 1 John 1:5-6 (ESV) This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Graduations are a highlight of our month here at Heartland, held the second Sunday of the month at Heartland Community Church during the 9am service. Today, I want to talk about why it's so important that we walk out our faith together. Every time we gather, whether it's a big service or a smaller group, it really matters. So, let's take a quick look at why we do all these different gatherings and how we can actually encourage and build each other up in our everyday walk with Jesus. To help us unpack this, we're going to dive into a great passage in Hebrews where the writer talks right about this—why meeting together and encouraging one another is such a big deal.

Hebrews 10:23-25 (ESV) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
