Being and Doing: A Lesson from Archery
Archery–using a bow and arrow to hit a target–can be a great metaphor for any mindful, intentional action.
While there are important skills to exercise and practice in archery: proper stance; balance; coordination; depth perception; aim; nocking the arrow; drawing the bow; etc., the activity also requires a serious head game: single-pointed focus and concentration, clarity of mind, patience, and presence. You can’t be checking Facebook if you want to hit the target. Nor can you plan your grocery list or argue with your dog about when it is time for a walk (not that you will ever win that one). Even the subtle mind-chatter must settle down. Get too carried away with the inner dialog (“I’ve got this; I’m going to nail it…”) and you will likely miss the mark.
Archery requires a full presence of BEING in the MOMENT right NOW. You fill the moment with awareness: of your technique, your breathing, your mind, the target, the sights, sounds, atmosphere all around you, your inner BEING. It is only when the body and mind settle into stillness that there’s any prayer of the arrow being released the right way.
And then comes the clincher. Once we are ready, we come into an intuitive, instinctual knowing of the right “when” to release the arrow. There may be a hesitation, murmur of anticipation, or a voice of “not yet,” or “now,” but then it happens. All at once. The arrow flies. Gone!
What I find remarkable is that the actual action of “shooting” the arrow is just a simple release. It is accomplished by letting go. How radical is that? We DO something by letting go! And how well we let go is based on how we are BEING. If we have prepared well for the action, in full presence of BEING in the MOMENT, the relatively small act of doing, when we arrive, will be much more aligned with our clarity and intentions.
We often spend too much concern with DOING. What should we do? How? Why? With whom? This metaphor is an invitation to bring your BEING to the forefront of whatever it is that you are engaged with right now, whether reading this post, walking to the coffee pot, checking the time, whatever… If you can be fully present, how might this affect your next action, your next spoken word, your next glance, your next turn of the steering wheel? How are you showing up for yourself and the world in this continuous, flowing, NOW of pre-action, pre-next thing? What will this presence of BEING inspire in you?
So, please take a moment, take stock of your BEING. Breathe, look around, listen, feel yourself contained within your skin, feel the air around you. Notice your emotions, posture, your energy, your sense of flow or resistance. Whatever the next arrow in your quiver is, or represents to you, give it time, space, and awareness. Settle in. And when it is the right time, let it go!
