The Women and Girls Foundation is excited to begin accepting applications for our 2018 - 2019 GirlGov. A yearlong program designed to provide local girls with the opportunity to learn, first hand, about government, civics, advocacy, philanthropy, community involvement, youth organizing, women’s history, and leadership.
The program is open to all girls entering 9th to 12th grade in the Fall of 2018 who live in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, Beaver, Butler and Westmoreland Counties. There is no fee to participate. Transportation to and from GirlGov monthly meetings is the participant’s responsibility. New and past GirlGov participants are welcome to apply.

This year’s program promises to be our biggest and best yet! Participants will have opportunities to:
• Attend two weekend retreats (Pittsburgh, PA and Harrisburg, PA)
• Meet and hear from State and local elected officials
• Create and build their own campaign
• Shadow a state legislator for a day at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA
• Explore nonprofit, for-profit and government career options
• Discuss issues affecting women and girls with key decision makers
• Meet and hear from accomplished women working in and with government
• Become (more) involved in community civics
• Most of all — have fun!

Because there was a delay in the grand opening for Jersey Mike’s Subs in the South Park Shops, the Jersey Mike’s Subs Day of Caring to benefit the Bethel Park Community Foundation will now be held on Wednesday, March 7. On March 7 only, 100 percent of the first day sales at Jersey Mikes will be donated to the Bethel Park Community Foundation, which benefits the community by providing grants to community facilities, projects that increase exposure to the fine and performing arts, provide opportunities in education for citizens of all ages, expand recreational and leisure time activities, and projects to promote community health and safety. Stop in on March 7 and support the BPCF! Thank you for your support!

AP Exam News—The Deadline to Register for AP Exams is Friday, March 9. NO registrations can be accepted after March 9. Students MUST register with Mrs. Janosik, who is now located in the office area that is behind the Main Office. Students need to go to the Main Office and they will be sent back to Mrs. Janosik, where they can pick up AP Exam Registration Paperwork. Please return the completed paperwork and payment to Mrs. Janosik. The cost of each Exam is $94 and is due at the time of registration. Checks are payable to “Bethel Park Activities Fund.” Cancelled exams or changes to exam registration are subject to fees established by the College Board. At the time of registration, students will be asked to complete a checklist and sign off on a registration verification. The form will be immediately copied and given to the student as a receipt, as well as a reminder of the Exam’s scheduled date and time. AP Exams will only be given on the National Test Date, with the exception of those exams falling on May 18, which is the BPHS Prom Date. Late Testing will only be authorized for AP European History and Latin, due to the conflict with the Prom. Students requesting late testing will be subject to the College Board’s $45 Late Testing fee. If you are requesting Late Testing for AP European History and Latin Exams, you will need to register using the shaded box for late testing and will pay $139 for each late testing exam. Please refer to the AP Bulletin for test dates, times, exam fee explanation and all additional information.

Allegheny County Human Relations Commission announces the 2018 Diversity Awards. The guidelines are:
1. Students in grades 9 to 12 are eligible to participate
2. Students may submit an individual or group paper project.
3. The paper should pertain to diversity or discrimination.
4. The deadline for submission of the paper or project is March
31, 2018.
5. Students or groups to be honored will be notified by April 13th.
The ACHRC Diversity Awards Ceremony will be held on May 10, 2018 at the Allegheny County Courthouse. Awards will be given out by County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
Some examples of projects are:
1. Initiating a Poster Campaign to create awareness and
encourage discussion about diversity/discrimination.
2. Authoring a blog or column in the school newspaper about
diversity/discrimination.

Camp Erin is a free weekend-long, overnight camp for children and teens (ages 6-17) that have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. This bereavement camp provides a safe, caring place for grieving kids to share feelings with others who may have experienced a similar loss. Grief activities may include: art therapy, journaling, remembrance activities and a luminary ceremony. Other activities that campers may enjoy are crafts, swimming, zip line, rope courses, sports, archery, music, pet therapy and camp fires. This event will be at the YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, located 30 miles north of Pittsburgh on June 8-10, 2018. The Abraham Lincoln PTO Award is a new scholarship that is being offered to the graduating seniors who have attended Abraham Lincoln Elementary School for at least 2 years. The PTO will award 2- $500 scholarships to 2 deserving students. Applications and more information is available in the Guidance Office.

The 2017/2018 Bulletin for AP Students and Parents is now available in the Counseling Office.
Any AP Student interested in taking an AP Exam in May 2018 must stop in the counseling office during the next two weeks to pick up their bulletin from Mrs. Janosik.
This is NOT registration for the AP Exam - but only the preliminary information about dates/procedures/offerings/costs/fees.
Registration will begin the last week of February and students and staff will receive notification of the registration dates closer to that time.

Waynesburg University's CSI Camp 2018 will be held June 17 through June 22nd. This is a great opportunity for students to learn from certified experts in areas such as surveillance techniques, forensic science, canine workshops and speakers on topics like wrongful convictions and the role that forensic evidence plays in court cases.
