Brothers,

I hope that your Thanksgiving was a joyful one and your holiday plans are moving along.

I recently completed the contract for rooms at Oglebay Resort nee Park for the 2022 reunion. It’s been great catching up with you on the Zoom calls, which will likely resume soon. As always, we encourage you to find brothers out there who are not on this mailing list.

Oglebay has set aside 22 rooms for the event. As a reminder, SPOUSES ARE WELCOME. Whether you choose to bring a spouse or significant other is up to you.

Our cut-off date for booking rooms, that is guaranteeing them, is April 20. However, I’d like to see us book as much as we can prior to that. Any rooms left unsold, but not cancelled, after April 20 will be charged to the group. I have no way of knowing at this point how many of you will be attending. If we actually need more rooms, that can be arranged as well.

Here’s the information for booking. To make a reservation:

Telephone 877-436-1797
Refer to booking #45016
You will use their personal credit card for deposit.

There will be lots of planning to do ahead of the event. We’ll need some volunteers for the following:

Eminent Golf Pro: Your job will be to organize an outing for those who wish to play.
Eminent Recorder: You won’t be taking Chapter Meeting notes. You’ll be making up playlists for music. Bonus points if you record it on cassette tapes.
Eminent Photographer/Archivist: You will bring together photos from the past and of the present for display at social events.
Eminent Registrar: You will put together name badges complete with embarrassing Baby Book photos, Chapter offices held, graduation year, etc. A complement to the Baby Book, a sort of post-Bethany yearbook, wouldn’t be out of order.

I’m sure we’ll have other opportunities, large and small, to make the reunion a memorable one. But first, let’s start booking rooms.

Phi Alpha,

Greetings from the Social Director’s desk,

As most of you know, though a few on this list may be seeing this for the first time, a number of the alumni of WVa Beta have been meeting via Zoom since the early spring. As our meetings have evolved, we have collectively agreed to explore a reunion in 2022. Some of this is built upon the good work that some of our WVa Beta founders, including Paul Leichter and Kenn Morgan copied here, have done to gauge interest and commitment for a 50th Anniversary reunion of the fraternity. That 50th anniversary date has passed and a reunion was not held thanks to the pandemic.

As we discussed the possible reunion, I forwarded two surveys to narrow our choices of dates and venues. The result of that polling, in which about half of this group participated, identified spring of 2022 at Oglebay Resort as the preferred choice. Jay Himes, ’76, deputized me to explore the details and here they are, so far.

Date: May 20-23, 2022
Location: Oglebay Resort
Itinerary: Three days with a mix of meals together, activities like golf or hiking, and a visit to Bethany. At the time of the visit, we would hold a brief ceremony to remember those brothers who have died
Cost: $725-$905. (BEFORE taxes, gratuities, or other fees.) Includes room charges for three nights, meals together, transportation, miscellaneous fees
Additional costs would be member out of pocket including breakfasts and lunches, golf greens fees, cash bar fees for some nights. These additional out of pocket costs would be discretionary. If you don’t play golf, no greens fees, for example.

These are rough estimates based upon information from Oglebay Resort and discussions with their event planners. Of course, many details would need to be fleshed out. The purpose of this email is to let you know what you might expect and a date, though not firm, that is available for us. I continue to discuss the event details with Oglebay, Bethany Alumni office, and some of you on this list. I welcome your feedback. I suspect that this will be a primary topic of discussion on our September 23 Zoom call that Jay will organize. He’s done a great job of corralling us and he will send out a meeting notice as we get closer to that date.

++++

I recieved a Email recently from Bethany College promoting the 2020 Virtual Homecoming. Many of you may have recievec the same Email. When I went to the site to registered I discovered something interesting . One of the activities "Greek L ife Gathering was at 10:30 AM Eastern time on Saturday was a Zoom for individual fraternities and sororities to meet. SAE was one of the choices. I registered. All of you should register and we could meet online together. Not only wouild it be great to see each other but we could also use it as a type forum to dicuss what if any thing we want to do for a 50+ reunion !

We should consider having a "ZOOM" reunion some time this fall since we can't schedule any in person gatherings for a while

I am happy to say that I received more than 30 psoitive responses to holding a 50 year Bethany College SAE reunion. Things right now are not quite proceding as smoothly as we had hoped. The plan was to hold the SAE Reunion on campus perhaps in conjunction with Homecoming or the spring Alumni Weekend using the Gresham Conference Center /Hotel as the base. Unfortunately the College just announced that the Gresham Center is being closed indefinitely and all future events scheduled there have been cancelled. We are going to have to look for another venue. Of course Wilson Lodge at Ogelbay Park is the next most logical alternative. The question is when, since we may be competing with other events in the area for space. We would like some input from those who read this. Should we try to schedule there for sometime THIS spring 2019 say April/May if we can get the space or try for a football weekend NEXT fall perhaps in conjunction with Homecoming or another weekend ?
Please give your input
