PAUSE Day 1- Kindergarten and First grade teachers engaged in job embedded professional learning focused on teaching phonemic awareness with intention. We reviewed the research on the the importance of phonological awareness in kindergarten and first grade. We practiced multi sensory strategies and various manipulatives and scaffolds to support student learning.

PAUSE-Day 2 Charles F. Hard Elementary School. 2nd and 3rd grade teachers engaged in job embedded data based professional learning. They practiced science of reading strategies to support multisyllabic word instruction and syllable types. We made learning fun and teachers were excited to take the new strategies back to their classroom!!

Fall is here and the LRS at Jonesboro Elementary School is helping her staff and students Fall in Love with Poetry. Dr. Collins has created a cozy place in her office for teachers to sit and enjoy some rich poetry. She has also engaged the faculty in spreading their love for poetry with students as they prepare for a Poetry Slam. Great job Dr. Collins!!!

Let’s Taco ‘bout The Alabama Literacy Act was a success. Great job LRS Audryana Kelley. Ms. Kelley engaged second and third grade parents in a conversation around the Alabama Literacy Act. She shared literacy supports offered by the school and ARI to help students move towards grade level proficiency.

There was a full house this evening at Central Park Elementary for their Parent Engagement Open House. Parents, teachers, district leaders, community leaders, and community partners all came together to “show up” for the students of Central Park. True collaboration at its best. Parents walked away saying they have never experienced anything like this, and saying this was the most informative event they’ve ever been a part of. I’m so excited to be partnered with Central Park in this work. ARI / The Alabama Reading Initiative and the Family and Community Engagement team were setup to provide practice activities and share resources to support families at home. Flames for Literacy are spreading at Central Park.

The kindergarten students at Jonesboro Elementary School are fully engaged in alphabet boot camp skill building through both whole and small group instruction. Teachers are being supported by LRS Collins as she collaborates on when to make adjustments and instructional shifts based on the progression of student learning.

Dr. Collins explained coaching cycles, planning meetings, provided food and entertainment as she showcased some past coaching interviews with current teachers, introduced coaching artifacts, and explained coaching for ALL. - You too can be a winner through student centered coaching!!!
