From Executive and Artistic Director (& CCPA alum!) Élider DiPaula: Project 88 Music Academy is a nonprofit [501(c)(3)] organization that aims to make high-quality music education accessible to all students. Our students currently participate in one of two programs: Preparatory Program (introductory music classes) and Apprentice Program (private lessons, group classes, and Composition classes). Read more detailed descriptions about our programs at www.project88musicacademy.org

The Academy is expanding and we are looking to add more teachers, specifically for our Apprentice Program to teach either piano, violin, brass, and/or composition (including theory concepts) through private lessons and larger group classes. Teachers are expected to teach lessons in-person (following safety protocols) at our facility at 6720 31st Street, Berwyn, IL 60402. Pay rate is $40/instructional hour.
Interested candidates should forward their resume to [email protected] with a note conveying what they are able to teach.

There are still seats available you can register for, or the performance will be livestreamed with a repeat on Sunday, 12/12. 💚💚💚
NOVEMBER 13 CONCERT CHANGE!
Due to illness, The Project Chamber Orchestra will not be performing this Saturday night.

BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON! Project 88 will still have live music this Saturday evening!

The Gill-Han-Gonzalez Trio will take the stage and share their various combinations of violin, cello, and piano with the Project 88 audience.

First, we will embark on the journey from Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano in a modern-day commedia dell'arte version of "Pierrot is angry at the moon" to Beethoven's fourth cello sonata, composed during the time when his deafness was overwhelmingly profound. Followed by Ravel's dedication to the memory of Debussy, where the "music is stripped to the bone," we'll experience the Sonata for Violin and Cello. Finally, in celebration of Astor Piazzolla's 100th birthday, we welcome the season of 'Winter' with the second piece from his Estaciones Porteñas for piano trio.

If you have already reserved tickets on Eventbrite, your tickets are still valid.

If you have not yet reserved tickets, you can still do so at www.project88musicacademy.org/concert-tickets or by visiting Project 88 Music Academy on Eventbrite.

Meet Matthew Lorenz, April 15th Project 88 performer.

He is rising to prominence as a pianist in the American Midwest, aiming to usher the art and lifestyle of piano performance to the 21st century.

Matthew’s performance experience as a pianist extends from Bismarck, ND to Santa Rosa, NM, then Paris; and beyond. Currently based in Chicago, IL, he is engaged in solo performances and frequent collaborations. Often described as a “powerful” player with a unique perspective on the “big picture” of his music, Matthew also brings a heartfelt sensitivity and attention to detail that makes him just as comfortable playing Bach and Chopin as he is playing Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

In the current season, Matthew is promoting his recital Chopin & Rachmaninoff, which features the entire cycle of Rachmaninoff’s monolithic 13 Preludes Op. 32 in honor of Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday. This summer he will also be on the road with The Wild Stage, the cabaret troop he shares with soprano Brady Collins. Be on the lookout for his marathon program CONCERTO which will present the Rachmaninoff 1st Concerto, the Mozart 20th Concerto, and the Ravel G Major Concerto all in one sitting.

Join Project 88 for Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday: Preludes performance this Saturday, April 15 at 6:30 P.M.

Rewatch the March 11 concert featuring Anita Graef, cello, and Louise Chan, piano. https://project88musicacademy.org/concert-series/watch-now/

This cello and piano duo graced the Project 88 stage with a unique and inspirational program.

The evening started with Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14. This piece composed around 1915 has become increasingly popular since his death and is frequently performed as an instrumental piece. Graef and Chan performed the long lyrical melodic lines beautifully while touching on a range of moods including desire, despair, turmoil, and peace.

Next came a new to the audience work from David Baker. Baker was an American composer born in Indianapolis. He rose to prominence as a jazz trombonist and later a cellist. He founded the jazz studies program—one of the first of its kind at an American university—at Indiana University. David Baker’s Sonata for Cello and Piano was written in 1974 for Janos Starker and features jazz-influenced scales, polyrhythms, and melodic ideas based on the styles of John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery.

After the intermission, the duo took the stage to perform Johannes Brahms's Cello Sonata No. 2 in F Major. The sonata was composed in the summer of 1886 at the request of cellist Robert Hausmann. For the nineteenth-century music critic Eduard Hanslic, the Cello sonata was “fiery to the point of vehemence, now defiantly challenging, now painfully lamenting.”

Rewatch or watch the performance until March 22.

Project 88 January 14th Concert Recap:

This past Saturday, Yuri Tanaka took to the Project 88 stage to start the celebration of Rachmaninoff's 150 birthday. Once again, Yuri played with finesse, precision, and heart. Many in the audience swore she had to have had another hand to be able to play so many notes.

The first portion of the performance included Rachmaninoff’s Opus 39 Études-tableaux (“study-pictures”). Each Étude-Tableaux paints a miniature sound portrait, and watching Tanaka perform these pieces was a visual and aural experience with a variety of moods and emotions.

After the intermission, Tanaka returned to perform the “Elegy,” from Rachmaninoff’s early work Morceaux de Fantasie. The piece was written as a tribute to Rachmaninoff’s recently deceased composition instructor, Anton Arensky.

Finally, at the start of Sonata No. 2, Tanaka was very focused on the piece, which resulted in a beautiful performance. Specifically, the sonata’s three movements are played without pause, and the overall structure is cyclical, united by melodic variants of the first movement’s first theme.

Rewatch the concert video until January 22nd to hear Rachmaninoff come to life through the artistry of Yuri Tanaka.
