Everyone wants to talk about bat speed, launch angle, and exit velocity… Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Rays are out here winning games with bunts. Not accidental swinging bunts. Intentional, practiced, game-changing bunts. That matters. Because while the game has evolved, defenses have evolved with it and in some ways, they’ve become vulnerable. Corner infielders play back. Pitchers don’t defend first the same way. Most teams don’t practice small ball like they used to. The Rays saw that gap… and they’re exploiting it. I think that’s the lesson here. You don’t have to choose between old school and new school. The smartest players use every weapon available. If you’re a young player with speed, don’t let anyone convince you bunting has no value.
