Horse Dental Day at GHS:

Proper dental care is an essential part of keeping horses healthy, comfortable, and performing at their best.

Regular dental care isn’t just about maintaining a horse’s ability to do its job—it plays a vital role in how effectively they can chew and assimilate their feed. Healthy aligned teeth help horses break down forage properly- horses chew in a circular motion that moves forage from front allllll the way to the back making a bolus that gets further broken down in the GIT. The teeth must grind forage sufficiently for the gut to be able to do its job. This goes beyond just supporting efficient digestion! Teeth that are sharp or misaligned can cause discomfort that can affect eating, behavior, and overall well-being.

By prioritizing routine yearly dental care, we can help our horses feel their best from the inside out. When done regularly it’s not a big deal at all! Prevention is a great approach always!

We are very blessed to have an amazing Horse Dentist. He takes such good care of our ponies. It’s also such a calm, relaxed experience. The horses are allowed to express themselves and move around. He’s able to do even my tallest horses (all without sedation), and moves like a zen Buddha efficiently checking and examining all the teeth, including the hard to reach back ones, and then making sure the grinding surfaces are ready to rock ‘n’ roll for the next year. It’s always incredible to reach in and feel the before and after.

His knowledge of how the whole horse is connected always amazes me- aside from the obvious food and bitting accommodations, he also has helped me with hind end and poll issues that actually have roots in the mouth. It’s just amazing the difference once can see and feel before and after a dental visit.

Shaital had his first GHS Dental today and of course was an ABSOLUTE HAM the whole time. I have never met a happier or sillier horse. Everyone was giggling at his faces, with tongue poking out, rubbing the wall with his nose, and all his General goofiness. But with the teeth done, he is ready to learn about bridles now!

Summit the Mustang watched carefully at this new weird human Thang… he was curiously scared. Maybe next year, little buddy, you can have a go…

Liberty Work in All Colors:

The Moment you realize she’s not attached to the second horse, but he’s doing the pattern at Liberty🥹❤️

My wonderful student has literally Never worked with, or handled the horse in Pink, Stetson. Stetson’s mom spent the entire winter working on foundational skills, like strengthening, rebalancing, tweaking his diet, and most importantly teaching this guy how to learn and love working with people. At this point, he can pick up new skills astonishingly fast! He can learn and he’s motivated too- the magic combination.

Stetson recently became best friends with Pony. He had been watching the little guy’s lesson very frustrated in previous weeks and this occasion he insisted he come in the ring too. I’ve learned enough over the years to honor his kind of request 😆

So I figured he’d hang out with me, eat corner hay, or bug my student’s mom. But NO!

He went straight into formation and proceeded to work at liberty with Pony on his own. She wasn’t even doing traditional positive reinforcement in this class. Stetson Never practiced any of this with Pony or my student, but has watched me do pairs with my crew frequently.

My student however, has been working hard at her skills for years. She can rate her energy, pick up body cues quickly, and shape conversations with a variety of horses. She flowed into this double conversation between her, pony, and Stetson effortlessly. 🥹

How long did Stetson work with them- the whole class until I ultimately had to catch him so Pony could trot. Stetson was so proud of himself. I was proud of all of them- the ponies, my student, and Stetson’s mom!

This is how horse stuff can feel with lots of hard work behind the scenes - magic🪄🦄
