Title IX Assembly
A representative from Andrews University presented our second assembly of the school year on Title IX. She explained that the university’s philosophy for how we interact with one another is based on Romans 12:10. "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves”. Title IX guidelines provide practical direction for how we are to treat and interact with each other.

The presentation was both informative and interactive. Students learned what behaviors to look for, what steps to take if they experience or witness inappropriate behavior, and whom they can report concerns to. It was a valuable opportunity for students to better understand their rights, responsibilities, and resources.

Mr. Daniel Cerna, AA choir teacher, invited the students to sing a hymn from the new hymnal that the Class of 2026 gave last spring. We sang “Tell Me the Story of Jesus.” To provide a variety of singing on Mondays, we often include hymns as part of our music.

Pastor Gabriel Johnson, AA Bible teacher, shared that this year’s theme focuses on the first part of the New Testament, particularly the Gospels. He explained that too often we do not see things the way they really are. For example, we say that the sky is blue, but technically, the sky itself is not blue. During the day, sunlight interacts with gases in the atmosphere, causing the blue color we see in the sky. At night there is no blue.

Pastor Johnson encouraged the students to remember that the Bible is a collection of testimonies from people who experienced God. He shared about growing up knowing a great deal about the Bible, then attending seminary, where he spent time debating various topics and trying to tell people what they should believe. Later, through an educational trip to the Bible lands, he began to see Scripture differently—as a collection of testimonies.

He encouraged the students to examine these testimonies for themselves and to ask, “What am I learning from these testimonies?” By doing so, we can better understand who Jesus really is.

Thank you, Andrews Academy Class of 2026, for your generous class gift this past spring!

Today, Pastor Johnson invited everyone to pull out their Bibles and open to Luke as we begin this year’s focus on the Gospels.

He pointed out that the Bibles are brand new, as are the hymnals we use during our song services. Your generous gift is greatly appreciated and will be a blessing to our school for many years to come. Aug. 24, 2026

On Friday, Vice Principal David Vandenberg shared a little of his journey toward becoming AA vice principal. Like many of us, he has asked God for clarity about what he should do. He reminded us that God doesn’t always tell us where to go; more importantly, He wants us to invite Him to go with us.

He shared a story about someone who asked Mother Teresa to pray for clarity about what he should do. Instead, she said, “No, I will pray that you will trust God.” What a powerful insight! While we may want clarity, what we really need is to deepen our trust in God. Aug. 21, 2026

Pastor Johnson, AA Bible teacher, presented on this year’s theme, disConnect. He emphasized the importance of the word connect: as we disconnect from the distractions around us, we should connect more closely with Jesus.

John 15:4 says, “Abide in me, and I in you.” This is a powerful reminder that when we stay connected to Jesus, He can bless our lives. Without that connection, we cannot bear fruit.

As we share Jesus with others, it is important for them to see the blessings of being a Christian—the fruit that comes from a life closely connected to Him.

Principal Perez-Schulz presented the first chapel of the school year, reminding students that they have been chosen to be part of the Andrews Academy family. He emphasized that God is in charge of every aspect of our lives and that, when it comes to God, we do not believe in accidents. There is a purpose behind every aspect of our lives. This concept is beautifully expressed in John 15:16: “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”

He then shared examples of important and well-known people in the Bible who began serving God at a very young age. He encouraged each student to recognize that they are never too young to serve God and that God has great plans for their lives. He reminded students of God’s words in Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart.”

In the final round of the board race, the seniors took an early lead and won the board race competition during hodgepodge on the first day of school for the 2026 - 2027 school year. August 19, 2026.
