Financial Impact of County Property Tax Changes on Edison Local Schools 🏫
Edison Local Schools recognizes the importance of property tax reform that balances relief for homeowners with the continued support of essential public services, including education. 🎓
Achieving this balance depends on all of us—families, local governments, businesses, and the state—working together as local and state decisions continue to shape the future of our schools. 🎒
Earlier this week, Erie County Commissioners approved two new property tax credits—the Homestead Piggyback Credit and the Owner-Occupied Credit—made possible through House Bill 96. 💳
These credits will reduce property taxes for qualifying homeowners, but unlike previous programs, the State of Ohio will not reimburse local governments or schools for the lost revenue. This means homeowner savings will come directly from local funds that support education and community services. 💰
For Edison Local Schools, the estimated loss from Erie County is $243,248.74 beginning in Tax Year 2026. If Huron County adopts the same credits, the total would rise to about $299,351 in the first year, with potential reductions reaching $1.68 million by 2030. 📈
The district is dedicated to fiscal responsibility and transparency—continually monitoring spending, finding efficiencies, and making the most of every dollar to support student learning and achievement. Edison Local Schools will continue providing the best possible education and experiences for our students with the resources available, and we will keep our community informed as Huron County weighs its decision and as we evaluate what these changes may mean for our district. 👩🎓👨🎓🧑🎓
