Forest preschool has been focused on maps, with some students volunteering to be Navigators for our morning nature walks. Navigators learn about responsible leadership, make important choices about the direction of adventures, and problem solve when they come across obstacles in the path.

Introducing ten frames to interested students, in the form of a Treasure Frame Challenge! Deciding how many of which treasures to gather and place on the board involves visually breaking down ten total spaces into ones, twos, and fives for TKers, while toddlers practice their sorting and categorization. Today the children looked out for smooth rocks, acorns, and dried wild radish seed pods, and won all the challenges they set for themselves.

Building hand-eye coordination with Teacher Liana, by making pine needle baskets or frames! Children decorated their own basket bases, gathered and counted enough pine needle bunches to make the thickness consistent, and practiced with large blunted needles and string to loop tightly around the pine needles until secured.

Returning to the same activity again and again as it is requested by the children, gives them more or less unlimited time and space to complete a project, consider the results, approach it again with fresh perspectives and methods. Eβs latest perspective on pine needle brooms: βWHAT IF GIANT?β We learned a lot.
