Art and Science of Self-Defense WingChun techniques are deliverable regardless your body size or quantity of muscle. WingChun refines your mind and body.

We are the diverse and awesome community who loves and enjoys to practice the art and science of self-defense. The majority of modern martial arts were converted to sports. Especially in these combat sports, techniques have been intentionally re-designed to be less efficient and less dangerous to avoid severe injuries while people are competing. The training methodology is to win competitions with

Visual processing takes 250ms, but skeletal vibration triggers a spinal reflex in as little as 30ms. In high-pressure martial arts, relying on your eyes is too slow. 🥋⚡️

In this week’s WingChun Physics 101, we explore the Proprioceptive Paradox: why over-gripping effectively desensitizes your nervous system and how to maintain a structural bridge that outpaces an opponent’s vision.

Mastery is found in the quality of the connection, not the effort of the reach. By tuning your sensor and letting go of the need to chase a specific result, you allow the situation to reveal its own solution.

Fuel the momentum of your potential without becoming your own obstruction.

The greatest paradox of martial arts? We learn how to fight so we don't have to.

It’s the ultimate form of self-care. It’s the highest form of mutual respect. When you respect your own boundaries, you learn to respect others' too. 🤝🛡️

Train your body. Protect yourself. Support the people around you.

High stakes require a steady mind.

Professional stress is usually managed by suppressing it. We do the opposite. We treat WingChun like Physical Chess. It is a technical framework designed to turn that energy into decisive physical action.

This is a martial art for the analytical mind. You use your body to solve mechanical puzzles in real time. Instead of mindless repetition, you calculate leverage and structural openings while your heart rate is elevated. It is a high speed exercise in staying objective while someone is actively trying to shut down your movement.

The Cognitive Override: Use technical logic to bypass the instinct to panic. You train your mind to stay level and operational while someone is physically closing in on you.

Mechanical Problem Solving: Every exchange is a calculation. You learn to use geometry and physics to move an opponent instead of relying on raw muscle.

Active Skill Acquisition: This is a physical discipline. You develop the coordination to direct your natural drive into a calibrated and effective response.

WingChun Body Intelligence 101: Learning from Reverse Role Models - WingChun Berkeley 11/30/2025

🤯 Stop Avoiding Failure: Learn Profound Lessons from "Reverse Role Models"
We usually look for inspiration in positive examples, but the most powerful lessons often come from the negative ones.

Do you have lasting memories of environments where incompetence thrived? Instead of letting those memories drag you down, it's time to use them as valuable data points to sharpen your own competence.

In our latest article, Sije Yuka Yoshioka breaks down the WingChun approach to Reverse Learning—a key component of Body Intelligence (BQ).

👉 In this article, you'll learn:

Why failure is essential: How top performers and scientists treat failure as pure data, not shame.

The Mirroring Trap: Why your nervous system is wired to copy the dysfunction you see, and how to create a physiological boundary to stop it.

Real-Time Awareness: How to use observed chaos to recognize the early signs of stress in your own body before it escalates (in and out of the kwoon).

The WingChun Advantage: Why the training studio is the safest place to experience failure and accelerate functional growth.

Your past negative experiences hold a map for competence—if you know how to read it.

WingChun Physics 101: Law of Gravitation - WingChun Berkeley 07/01/2025

“Gravity is the most constant force in our lives, yet most people ignore it." In WingChun, we do not fight gravity. We align with it. By learning to feel your center of gravity and connect it to the ground, every motion becomes stronger, more stable, and less tiring.

Unlike movie-style kicks or high-impact cardio moves that drain energy and break balance, WingChun uses gravity to support structure and timing. Your strikes flow with less strain. Your balance stays rooted under pressure, and your body moves as one connected chain.

With practice, you learn to turn this invisible force into an ally. Your movements become sharper. Your awareness deepens, and your training feels incredibly satisfying.

Build on what stays steady. Your skill will keep evolving around it.

We had a relaxing afternoon at Alameda beach, with wonderful WingChun people and delicious meals under the sunshine. It’s a bit windy, although sand was heated at perfectly warm temperatures and so comfortable, leading me into nap multiple times. 😆

We celebrated a new year with DIY hand-roll sushi after the Saturday class. Ingredients are so fresh and delicious, sushi rice, bamboo rice, miso soup, tuna, eggs, avocados, cucumber and more. My favorite was salmon belly and salmon eggs; tasted like an art in my mouth.
