Decision Day didn't go the way Viri expected. She only got into her backup school.
But it was the best thing that could have happened to her.
Just a few months into her freshman year at SJSU, she was recruited to work for Google and has been there for most of her career.
Decision day can come with so many mixed emotion: excitement for your future, but maybe also disappointment if you didn't get the results you expected.
But sometimes that can actually be the start of an even better journey than you planned.
If Decision Day didn't go the way you expected to, you're not alone. Viri's story shows how a disappointing Decision Day was actually the start of a career many aspire to.

Jos was told to NOT write about sports in his college application essay. He heard it was an overused topic that wouldn't get him accepted anywhere.
βΎ But Jos was a multi-sport athlete, and sports were his life. So Jos wrote about sports. And guess what?
After many rejections, he was accepted to ! Go bears!! π»ππ
Jos' story shows that when you are your authentic self, the universe will reward you for it- in spite of what everyone says.
That's what One Degree Hotter College Advising is all about: being proud of your authentic self because that's all we can control in college admissions.
β‘οΈ If you've ever felt the pressure to fit a certain narrative in college applications, you're not alone. I'd love to help you feel the relief and pride Jos felt too.

Starting my own business was never in my life plan π
but its been such a fun journey.
I've made my way through several types of jobs in education before starting One Degree Hotter. But what was always at the core of those jobs was making higher education possible for students.
I hope you enjoy learning more about where I come from and how it aligns with why I do what I do βΊοΈ
What is a research college vs. a liberal arts college? What does it mean for your experience?
In this episode I interviewed my SISTER about her experience through three colleges to finally find the right fit!
One thing Ana wishes she had looked into before choosing her school was the type of institution she was going to. UC Davis is a research school, which wasn't really a fit.
Despite many challenges, Ana made it through to ultimately earning a degree in journalism from

It was an honor to be a part of the Bridge to STEM program with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley! Our three sessions covered some essentials for students.
Truly an honor to play a small part in all of these scholars' educational journey!
Bridge to STEM - Scholarships 101π
Yesterday, HFSV held our fifth Bridge to STEM session led by the CEO of One Degree Hotter College Advising, Alejandra Acosta, to learn all about scholarships.
Students said this was perfect timing, right in the middle of scholarship season, and Alejandra's pro tips on how to write a competitive essay were very insightful for newcomers. This is what some of our BTS Scholars had to say about the session:
"The steps were easy to follow, and she teaches us a big dream."
" I think the essay brainstorm and outline workshops help with getting a footing on what to do."
BTS Scholars have 4 more sessions to better prepare them to transfer to a four-year university. Thank you to Alejandra for being such a committed partner, championing our newest programπ

Everyone talks about making a college list, but how do you do that??
That's exactly what I covered at the kickoff for the Bridge to STEM program, their inaugural program to support community college students' goal of transferring to a 4-year college in a STEM major.
There are many factors to consider, but some that get overlooked can be:
* Campus culture
* Community groups (LGBTQ+, Latina/o/e, transfer, veteran)
* Resources on and off campus
I worked with the students to start a list that met their goals, wants and needs.
Plus, we did a visualization to FEEL what it is students were working so hard towards. It can be so easy to forget that in the day to day grind, but thats what we're working for!
The energy from the Bridge to STEM students was AMAZING and I can't wait for our next two workshops.
Thank you to the for having me and !

β¨NEW!β¨ One Degree Hotter is expanding to include college advising for YOU!
So far, I've focused on my favorite part of the college app process: helping people write their essays.
But I felt I could give my students more. After all, preparing for college starts at the beginning of high school if not before.
This year I'm helping guide students through their ENTIRE high school journey. That way you know you're on your most authentic path.
Don't worry, I'll still be helping with essays and bringing you college admissions knowledge with a little extra flavor π
But now, we get to level up together!
And, Juniors, now is the perfect time to start preparing for fall application season so you can be C H I L L I N while everyone else is...not π
Thanks for taking this next step with me! Let's get you one degree hotter π₯
Share this with someone who's already thinking about college!
We're leveling up this year to help YOU level up. Can you guess what's next? I'll see you in the comments ππΌ
