“You were naked when you left your mother’s womb with your hands open asking for kindness.
Your world responded, showed mercy, and gave you what you needed.
Do not close your hand like a person who is leaving this world.”

HaMaqom | The Place (originally founded as Lehrhaus Judaica) announces that after 47 years of providing inclusive and accessible adult Jewish education, it will be ending operations after its summer 2021 term.
HaMaqom | The Place has deep roots in the Bay Area. It has been the leading provider of transformative adult Jewish learning experiences since 1974 offering courses and programs from leading Bay Area Jewish educators and serving the most diverse Jewish community in the world.
“This is an extraordinarily difficult decision for us to make, but I do believe that this is not the end, but a new beginning for our programs, staff, and extraordinary educators.” - Lisa Douglass, Board President
“Our hope is to conclude the teaching of Lehrhaus Judaica / HaMaqom | The Place with a final lesson: it is possible to wind up business operations in a manner in concert with Jewish values.” - Rabbi Ruth Adar, Executive Director

What was life like for Jews in the Roman world in the first century, especially for Jews in Roman Italy?
Our class introduces you to that world, then takes you on a virtual walking tour of Pompeii, from its theaters and eateries to its mansions and temples. Along the way, we’ll explore the likely Jewish presence in the city when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, and review mysterious texts that suggest Pompeii’s destruction was the work of the God of Israel.
Join us for this 2 session course beginning on July 1st

"'Rabbi Adar, is it dangerous to wear my Jewish star?'
In 12 years of teaching 'Introduction to the Jewish Experience' through HaMaqom | The Place in the San Francisco Bay Area, no student ever asked me that question in those words.
This year three students have asked it of me.
Every convert to Judaism makes a journey across the religious, cultural and emotional frontiers of Judaism. One of the milestones on that journey is the moment when antisemitism ceases to be theoretical, when it is felt in the kishkes, in the gut."

Explore the lived experience of Jewish life
While we often think of Judaism as a mentally oriented, text-based religion, in truth, its power also comes from the ways in which Judaism embodies the fulfillment of basic human needs.
In these three sessions, we will deepen our understanding of four basic aspects of Jewish life and bring them to life with an embodied approach. Each week we will learn more about the power of embodied practice to bring our spiritual life alive and to become more grounded in ways to express our culture and our faith.
3 Sessions
Begins Monday!
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM PDT
1️⃣st session (6/7) w/ Kendra Fried from Neshamah Yoga and Wellness
2️⃣nd Session (6/14) w/ Marilyn Paul, Ph.D. author & Organizational Consultant & Coach
